Pelosi Statement on President Obama’s Call to Extend the Middle Class Tax Cuts July 09, 2012

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after President Obama called for the extension of tax cuts for all Americans making up to $250,000 per year:

“Today, President Obama once again stood firmly with America’s middle class and small businesses. Democrats and the President have always fought for an extension of the tax cuts for middle-income families to offer greater relief and economic certainty to all working Americans.

“Once again, Republicans must decide: will they continue to hold middle class tax cuts hostage to tax breaks for the wealthiest or will they agree to pass the middle class tax cuts we all agree should become law?

“Republicans have failed to put forward a plan to create jobs or end the outsourcing of American jobs, and continue to waste valuable time on bills to nowhere. We must work together to extend tax cuts for the middle class, put people to work, and grow our economy.”

Pelosi claims the Bush tax cuts that have led to economic growth are only benefitting a certain segment of the U.S. population.

"With tax cuts for the wealthiest few causing red ink as far as the eye can see, incomes falling, and our jobs moving overseas, the economic record of President Bush is dismal for middle-class families," Pelosi said. "The Bush economy is going in the wrong direction: gas prices are sky-high and health costs are an overwhelming burden for too many Americans."
