The problem is that someone paid for exclusive rights. Exclusive isn’t an ambiguous term in business. Exclusive rights to give away free stuff? How goes that work?

It’s done all the time. Sponsorship is just a form of advertising. Exclusive rights mean that a company has secured the right to have only its products available for consumption/view.
