Obama Signs Federal Cigarette Tax Hike

On Feb. 4, 2009, only two weeks after being sworn into office, Barack Obama signed a bill to increase spending on the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (known as SCHIP) by $32.8 billion, to be funded by tax increases on cigarettes and other tobacco products.

This broke his promise of no tax increases for people making less than $250,000 annually. Or did he think only milionaires smoke cigarettes?

Obama's U.S. Federal Tax Increases on Tobacco:
(pay special attention to 3d item down)

Tax on a pack of cigarettes from $0.39 to $1.01 per pack

Tax on pipe tobacco from $1.0969 per pound to $2.83 per pound

Tax on RYO tobacco from $1.0969 per pound to $24.78 per pound

Tax on cigarette papers (50 or less) from $0.0122 to $0.0315

Tax on cigarette tubes (50 or less) from $0.0244 to $0.0630

They buy mild pipe tobacco and use it for cigarettes.
