Norwich (CT) school to cut down 160-year-old tree

A 160-year-old European Weeping Beech tree on the campus of Norwich Free Academy was cut down Wednesday afternoon because school officials felt that it became "a safety hazard."

The decision to take down the tree was made at a board of trustees meeting last week. The school's Chief Financial Officer Rich Rand said the decision was made after a 1,000 pound limb fell to the ground last week.

Students were upset with the tree, which was planted in 1850, being removed from campus.

"It's really difficult because the tree has been here for so long and it's really valuable to everyone at NFA," said student Karissa Flanders. A European Weeping Beech tree usually has a life span of 125 years.

The school has kept a 6-foot section of the tree's trunk, which is engraved by students from past generations.

No tree expert here but why couldn’t they trim it back and then put a barrier fence around its perimeter? Hope they used the wood for pencils at least, eeheheheh!

Every tree surgeon I’ve ever known always says “cut it down!” for some reason.

It’s like the advice in the medical realm: Don’t ever ask a surgeon if surgery is necessary....

Don’t willows typically resprout from the stump? Ours on the farm always did, and then we had a new row of willows.

That inspired me to cut down a tree, just for the fun of it.

In a traditional Catholic demonology I was amused to see that there was one demon whose sole occupation was to make tree branches fall off trees and kill people.

What a boring job.

Interestingly, according to the demonology, Hell is very top-heavy with demonic nobility, government bureaucracy, and very complicated demonic assignments. That is, a particular major demon might wear “several hats”, with very complex duty assignments.

Ruling over north-east Africa, with 2 legions of subordinate demon warriors, but also in charge of Bermuda grass and Tifgreen, concert master for a biannual demonic banquet and orgy, as well as purveyor of licorice candies to the unawares.

Yet this one demon makes tree branches fall on people, killing them. That’s it. For a few thousand years that’s all he does. How boring.

Compare that to another demon, whose name was Sytry. His sole function is to convince women to take off their clothes and dance in public. I imagine that after a thousand years of that, he is like a demonic Bob Fosse.

“And one, two, three, and... Okay, number 16, we’ll call you! Everyone else, from the top...”

There have been some severe power outages in Connecticut, the past few years (days at a time). Whenever the utility companies want to cut or trim trees, people go ballistic, but the same folks (and politicians) go crazy when power lines get knocked out by the same trees, during storms. Can’t win!

Yep. I lost power for just under two days from Irene and nine days from Alfred, the freak October snow storm with 18” on heavy wet snow on trees with most of the leaves still on them.

Some of the trees that came down in my area were the ones that I know people “saved” fro the evil power company chain saws. One of them blocked the major roadway in my neighborhood. It gave me great pleasure to drive my SUV around the tree and over one of the people’s lawn who fought to save the stupid tree.

Make sure you post a video of it on YouTube and let the huggers know.
