Calif. Republicans steer clear of Tampa
San Francisco Chronicle / SFGate.com ^ | Published 7:33 p.m., Saturday, August 25, 2012 | Debra J. Saunders

Like teenagers on vacation with their parents, Republicans from blue states and Democrats from red states don't want to be seen with party elders.

"I don't spend a lot of time thinking about Mitt Romney," Elizabeth Emken, the Republican who will face off against Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein in November, recently told me. "That's the truth. I've never met him."

Emken thinks she has a shot at winning the election precisely because she is not the pick of the GOP establishment.

"We've had millionaires and billionaires and CEOs and movie stars," said Emken in a not-so-subtle swipe at former top-of-the ticket Repubs Meg Whitman, Carly Fiorina and Arnold Schwarzenegger. "We need folks running."

Emken won't attend the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., this week. "I don't think there's any concrete reason I should go," she said.

When you're running as a Republican in a one-party (not yours) state, it's every candidate for herself. And make no mistake: California is home to more liberals than conservatives. Democrats represent about 43 percent of voters, compared with the GOP's 30 percent; they hold every statewide office and control both houses of the Legislature.

I wonder what happens if enough delegates decide to avoid the weather and controversy to prevent nomination. Not likely.

I made sure my friend, who is a high ranking Texas Republican worker, took water/food/flashlight, so she wouldn’t be stuck with nothing when Isaac came through. She would not have missed the convention, really couldn’t due to her position, so I did what I could to make sure she would be okay.

The candidates might not show up. The delegates will be there no matter what.

It is really aggravating to write a post and hit “Post” and it sits there for five minutes, so one hits “Post” again and two of them show up.

This has to be Jim Thompson's fault and John Robinson needs to fix Thompson's screw ups. Thank you, John Robinson for the work you do. Please dump Jim Thompson (I think that is his name.)

I usually have Firefox open in multiple windows. The forum open in one window. My prefs set so clicking on a link open the post in a new window.

If I want to post, I do. Once I click the POST button, I switch back to the window that has the forum in it and continue enjoying FR. Eventually the task bar entry for the Post changes to the article title meaning the post is done. So I click on that entry and close the window.

etc.

Thanks for posting that. I can do that, and will. So glad you told me this; I just hadn’t thought to do it.

Something else I do...

If I post before reading the entire thread, after I hit the post button I click the browser’s back button and that takes me back to the thread. Once you’ve clicked Post, your comment will post whether you wait for it or not.

I had not given this posting problem any thought and I should have checked out what was possible to get around the problem. You are a good guy, Mr. Upchuck, to bring this to my attention.

Thank you for the kind words.

I find myself living in the country, which is really great. Unfortunately there’s no broadband around here which really sucks. I’m stuck with a 56K dialup modem that is s-l-o-w.

I’ve developed tricks to get around the slowness. That coupled with FR general slowness can be a real drag :)

Dial-up? Do you live in a third world country? You say you live in the country (I looked at your “about” page), but I couldn’t live without fast connection. I have cable and it’s fast, fast.

How far back in the country are you? Dirt roads? Outdoor potty? Wood stove to cook? Heat bricks and cover them and put them in bed to warm it up before you get in? Pot bellied stove in living area to hudle around to stay warm during the day? I’m kidding you just a bit.

How far back in the country are you?

Far enough that I have no neighbors to speak of.

I lived in subdivisions all my life. I decided when I retired I wanted some peace and quiet. Here the only noise I hear is the wind blowing through the pine trees.

I've looked into buying a "cell phone modem" which would boost the speed some. "He who knows he has enough is rich."

Okay, but you double posted your response to me. Is that JT or JR’s fault?
