What could possibly go wrong?
Sadly, a number of things.
With hardly any donations coming in, there is no money to feed people camped there and not enough tents to keep its estimated 180 occupants shielded from the blazing sun or sudden afternoon thunderstorms, said the Rev. Bruce Wright, one of the tent citys founders.
We need about $3,000 to get it going, said Wright, a member of the Poor Peoples Economic Rights campaign. What we have is a trickle.
And what of the thousands of protesters? There are an estimated 180 people there and many of them are either organizers or homeless folks.
Wright said the camp, which sits on a commercial lot behind the Army Navy Surplus Market and an adjacent gravel lot at 1312 N. Tampa St., should have had about 300 people living there, planning rallies, speaking out on the plight of the homeless and protesting the convention.
The threat of Hurricane Isaac and the 3,500 extra police officers hired for convention security could have scared hundreds of people off, Wright said.
Their founder also reports that numerous homeless had to be booted out of the camp for violating rules regarding illegal drugs and alcohol.
We need to help (the homeless), but were a political homeless camp, Wright said. We need to maintain decorum.
Even with the numerous reports of fights breaking out and robberies taking place, I decided to brave the harsh Florida weather and check it out for myself. But it couldnt be all that bad, could it? Yes
yes it could.

I expected a lot of mayhem...maybe there saving it for the DNC....I really think the Yankees are afraid to come south...

Why don’t they pass the wool hats around?

Now, THAT’s funny.
Not for nothing, but if I won a free trip down to the RNC this week, I would have passed.
I'll deal with my blizzards in the North, the South can keep its hurricanes. : )
And if you read the article, there is no mention of what they are protesting. Just give me stuff (money).
Typical democrats. They want free handouts.
Some things never change.
Just a comment about this and it applies to both sides of the question.
This country was founded by men who were willing to walk IN THE DARK, BAREFOOT, MIDDLE OF WINTER, SNOW AND ICE, SEVERAL MILES, CROSS A FREEZING RIVER, just to fight a battle with the most highly trained army in the world. Trenton against the Hessians, led by General Washington.
I am beginning to think that is why we are in the mess we are now, there is no one available to put the same commitment to keeping the country going, a little rainstorm keeps us from doing what we should.
Huh?
LOL!
Daddy, when I grow up I want to make a difference...I want to run the "Poor Peoples Rights Campaign".
I'll do my bestest to achieve as many followers as I possibly can!
However, when it comes to taking up arms and fighting for freedom, you let me know where to be and what time and I'm there.
Feeding my family, and fighting to protect my family are two different things, with a completely different set of priorities for me.

Last I heard, Soros is selling stocks and buying gold.
Poor Peoples Economic Rights...PooPER.
My point is a general one, stating that we as a people do not have the guts or determination to become a little uncomfortable in order to press forward a belief. The Romneyville is a perfect example. If those against Romney/Republicans/Conservatives actually had a deep feeling about it, there would be thousands at the camp, instead we have 150-180 and most of those are there for free food, etc.
It is a sorry state of affairs and has deep implications for our country's survival as a democratic government.
Why isn’t the Tampa and/or Florida health department inspecting these squatter camps?
Why aren’t they looking into the toilet and bathing facilities? (because all they have are city provided PortaPotties.
What about the overall sanitation ?
Why aren’t they checking the food serving areas for compliance with local and state laws applicable to all licensed restaurants and food trucks?
The city and county have shut down churches who were feeding homeless people in buildings not zoned for food service.
The authorities hound local food service businesses over the slightest speck of dirt or unsanitary condition (as they should). But where is the enforcement at these pigsties?
Do the squatters have hot wash water at the legal required tenmperature and quantities?
Do they have sinks and toilet facilities for food service personel? The city and state will shut a local restaurant down for not having an approved wash sinks installed along with a soap dispenser and towels.
Why are they allowing drifters and squatters to occupy run down abandoned houses but require occupancy certificates for new homes with all the amenities and conveniences?
Thanks Hojczyk.
You get to live in shanties to protest the guy who's in office, saying his policies "force" you to live like that.
You don't build shacks and shanties to live in and say the guy who's not yet in office is responsible for you living like that, because no matter how much you call it a "Romneyville" people are going to call it an "Obamaville."
We need to maintain decorum.
I don’t know about the rest of you FReepers, but I’m willing to send the revvvrun a pair of curtains I saw in the dumpster. Come on, fellow FReepers, step up and contribute. If you can’t spend 25¢ for a can of old dog food at Goodwill, you’re cheap, uncaring and a rassist.
On a similar subject, my son lives near Zuccotti park in NYC where the Occupy camp was. He said there are still a few of them there and they’re not looking real good these days.
LOL
