Lake is 300 acres a full pool with average depth of 8’.
Lake is well above pool and also has a couple flooded creeks feeding the lake. These areas are holding a lot of water and all this will drain down.

Tangipahoa River is also probably extremely high which doesn’t give any breathing room. Also, the Tangipahoa is pretty narrow and a shallow river south of Kentwood.

Dam close to failing leads to mandatory evacuation along Tangipahoa River
http://www.wafb.com/story/19417024/dam-failing-leads-to-mandatory-evacuation-along-tangipahoa-river
PIKE COUNTY, MS (WAFB) -

Tangipahoa Parish is calling for a mandatory evacuation of all areas along the Tangipahoa River after officials were notified a dam in southern Mississippi is close to failing.

Officials said Mississippi Emergency Management notified GOHSEP and Tangipahoa Parish Government the dam at Lake Tangipahoa at Percy Quinn State Park is failing. Pike County officials said the dam has not yet failed.

Tangipahoa Parish President Gordon Burgess then issued the mandatory evacuation order. Shelter locations are as follows:

Hammond West Side Elementary Montessori School

Hammond Jr. High Magnet School

Natalbany Elementary School

Nesom Middle School

Amite High School

Kentwood High Magnet School

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for southwestern Pike County in southern Mississippi after the emergency management officials determined the dam would probably fail.

Forecasters expect severe flooding downstream along the Tangipahoa River from west of the McComb Airport and Magnolia to Osyka.

The water level is expected to rise nearly eight feet below the dam to six feet at Osyka. The river stage at Osyka is currently 14.8 feet.

The weather service said this is a flash flood emergency for all low-lying areas along the Tangipahoa River, including Osyka.

Hmmm .... looking at a map, I don’t see how this dam break would affect 50,000 people.

That’s bad. With half of Louisiana without power, let’s hope most have battery powered radios going and will learn about the threat.

Ironically, this Dam was scheduled for a major reconstruction, beginning NEXT WEEK, with the lake water level lowered 10 feet.

Pinging the preppers’ list. For all those who think it can’t happen or there’s no need to prepare for the future, here’s a perfect example. Ya just never know.

Always ask: could you evacuate in 90 minutes or less? Do you have a go-bag packed? Do you have a bag for your car, and one you can carry on your back?

The people of Tangipahoa Parish knew Hurricane Isaac was on its way and knew that the dam could break.

Why did they not evacuate before the storm?

Where are the school busses to evacuate these people?

I would bet that environmentalists have stood in the way of upgrading or maintaining this dam for years.

Any takers? ;-)
