Despite Convention Distractions, It's Still All About the Economy

Mercifully, the political conventions have ended.

The political press will keep buzzing over whether Clint Eastwood's unconventional speech helped or hurt Mitt Romney and whether the snafu over Israel and God in the Democratic platform will do any lasting damage to President Obama. Republican reporters will think former President Clinton talked too long, and Democrats will note that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie talked more about himself than about Romney.

But they are missing the point. The campaign is about what's happening in America, not what the politicians are saying.

At the beginning of 2012, it was easy to note that if the economy got better, Obama would be reelected. If it got worse, he would lose. That general dynamic still applies, but the economic results aren't that clear cut.

Looks like an “The Obama Recession” ping as well as a “Partisan Media Shills” ping. Thanks Arthurio.

I get rasmussens logic, but how can the economic situation be anything but clear cut. We are slowing down, unemployment is not eating better after 43 months. The statistics are getting more and more comparable to 1980. What would need to happen to be clearcut? If someone said two years ago we would be in September 2012 where we are...does Obama get reelected, everyone, including most democrats would have said no...he’ll no.

Frankly, I think almost anything that could have occurred would have been considered mixed news, and ‘could go either way’. The expectations keep eating dumbed down This is Romney’s to win...he has to make the case why this is so bad, and what he will do differently.

How can we get this across when the media is an Obama propaganda machine? I am sick of this!! Obama has enough straw men to fill a stable!

The Romney campaign has not even started to run the negative economy ads blaming Obama yet.Let’s face it.In reelection battles with a dismal economy, it is all about the incumbent not the challenger. If Romney wins it will because most folks will not so much have voted for Romney as against the incumbent. That is the purpose of the negative ad campaign to reinforce voters’ suspicions. How many of you have seen concentrated negative ads on the economy in your areas. Very few because I suspect Romney does not want to play his strong suit until the later stages of the campaign where he wants it to be concentrated in the end game leaving the incumbent little time to rebut the carpet bombing that this is indeed a Obama recession.Romney need only look back 4 years ago for a model on how to win the Presidency.Airing solutions is not necessary. Show the imagery of foreclosure signs, mushroom clouds and unemployment lines and end the commercial with the candidate’s photo above the words A New Dawn (or some other silly version of Hope and Change).

The economy will not get better if Obama is reelected due to capitalists not putting their money at risk and hedging that they can ride out another 4-years. The Democrats on the other hand may want to come up with a Presidential Signature commanding that all funds not being put to use are confiscated for the good of the state....

Romney is purported to start "carpet bombing the swing states with millions of $ worth of negative ads, after the Dem Convention"...
I live in TX - so I don't know first hand.

I wish I knew. Better ads, stronger messaging, and sharper distinctions would help. Our side has gotten through the media mud on many occasions. Reagan/Bush88, two Bush43 terms, a 12 year House majority run, and all the success we had in 2010 - from VA to MA to NJ early, and the butt kicking in November - and through the WI recall this summer. We can win despite it.

I am not sure I like what I am seeing the past two weeks though. Seems like they are playing it too safe. I hope to see something different over the next week. Somehow, Obama has weezled back into contention, when he should be cooked.
