I popped over to a Chicago cop’s blog to see what they were saying about this fiasco (because cops were to flood the streets because of the wild kids). Comments are pretty interesting. (Not my blog, btw.)

Fire them all and salt the earth.

Government schools are a plague —the worst invention of modernity.

More targets on the streets for the gangstas.

Expect the Chicago nightly death toll to rise...

It is the Left and Democrats’ “War on Children”

Abort them in the womb, fail to educate them when they are young, and destroy their future with Gov’t debt

WAR ON CHILDREN
WAR ON CHILDREN
WAR ON CHILDREN
WAR ON CHILDREN

Just keep telling yourselves that this isn’t just another greedy leftist union. This is for the children.

Public schools are the world’’s most expensive baby-sitting service. They also serve as juvenile detention centers.

Years ago, when the Dallas Cowboys had won their first Super Bowl, there was a big victory parade in downtown Dallas. A melee soon ensued, and one upset lady sputtered to the TV news reporter, “Why aren’t all these juvenile delinquents in school where they belong?”

-— It’s all up to Mayor Emanuel. We all want to go back to the classrooms. The mayor is not valuing our opinions as educators.——

Have to agree with Twinkletoes on this one.

Whatever happened to independent school districts? Does the Mayor of Chicago also supposed to run the schools? Do they not have a school board?

If they strike, fire them.

Oh wait, closed PUBLIC schools.... cool.

Shelters?

I guess educating children is a distant afterthought for Chicago’s Teachers union.

“Red on red”. How funny.

Maybe governor Walker will send Rahm Emanuel a nice note, offering him accommodations in Wisconsin if he wishes to flee Illinois. Along with a gift card to Chick-fil-A.

Personally, I’m hoping that Emanuel goes nasty on the union and gives them a major beat down. The best way to do this is to offer up a bunch of public schools for sale to charter school companies.

Free enterprise is known for its quick response time, and I imagine they would be all over that offer like a duck on a June bug. This would throw the union into an utter panic.

Rahm should pull a “Ronald Reagan” and FIRE all the striking teachers, offer to hire some thousand of unemployed recent college graduates, provide relocation assistance (as part of the $400 M the school turned down) and offer the “New Teachers” 6 months of a housing stipend until they can get settled.

THEN see how many of these former teachers can get a job. I mean they only turned down a 16% raise.

You cannot tell me that there are not people willing to work for the previous salary!

I saw this Chicago Teacher's Strike story on Insta pundit. He had the following 'update' added:

UPDATE: A suspicious reader emails: “It MAY be ALL coincidental, but within the last couple of weeks, my cousin told me about a truly diabolical plan for election ‘optics.’ He is a Longshoreman in Texas. His union was considering going on strike for the sole purpose of allowing BHO to intervene and settle the labor dispute and look like either a uniter or maybe even tough on unions. So, when I saw that Rahm’s teachers went on strike in spite of a 16% pay raise offer, my mind went places that logic would never take it, but modern day politics do. Worth watching anyway. Also, to protect my cousin from retribution from union thugs, I suppose it would be best to avoid attribution here.”

This could be sticky. Could this be Obama's October surprise? Does any FReeper out there have anything to add?

Nothing more than zer0’s best buddy, Rahm, and his most reliable supporters, the teachers’ union, putting on a theatrical performance so he can magically ride into his supposed hometown and save it from this impasses. He has to do this to counter Walker’s beatdown of the public unions in Wisconsin.

“Some schools opened to serve breakfast and lunch”

I worked in a small school district (8 elementaries - 2 high schools) in So. Cal for a few years for the the elementary school lunch program. At one time they were going to start this breakfast program. Supervisor asked for suggestions from us “lunch servers” (aka, dreaded lunch ladies). I tried to get behind the program but it was difficult as every suggestion I had was turned down.

I pictured 20 or so kids sitting at a table sharing a big box of wheaties, or corn pops or whatever, cups of OJ poured from large container, milk for the cereal out of a pitcher and a piece of sliced fruit. We had a full service kitchen — so we could intersperse hot oatmeal and raisins or Cream of Wheat in between the cold cereals.

No, No, No each kid had to have individual boxes of OJ, Milk, and those little cereals, doubling the cost of course for taxpayers. The little boxes were so they could have a “choice”. My response was “This is free — what’s the big choice thing going on here.”

My final suggestion of saying Grace, or a moment of thanks for this meal was just laughed at out loud, as I knew it would be.

So, in summary, what I envisioed as what could have been a fun start of the day for the little kids, with good humor and a flower or two on the table occasionally, turned into a costly assembly line of 20 griping kids with half-eaten breakfast — just like at the lunch time where trash cans are full of food.

My rant for the day. Thanks for listening (reading).
