Bob Dylan: Stigma of slavery ruined America, singer says

NEW YORK (AP) — Singer-songwriter Bob Dylan says the stigma of slavery ruined America and he doubts the country can get rid of the shame because it was “founded on the backs of slaves.” The veteran musician tells Rolling Stone that in America “people (are) at each other’s throats just because they are of a different color,” adding that “it will hold any nation back.” He also says blacks know that some whites “didn’t want to give up slavery.” The 71-year-old Mr. Dylan said, “If slavery had been given up in a more peaceful way, America would be far ahead today.” When asked if President Obama was helping to shift a change, Mr. Dylan says: “I don’t have any opinion on that. You have to change your heart if you want to change.” The magazine’s new issue hits newsstands Friday.

Hey, Bob!

All the slavers were Democrats.

The KKKers were Democrats.

The boobs in Congress who fillibustered the Civil Rights Acts were Democrats.

Starting to see a pattern, Bobby?

Does this include the Ottoman Empire?

England?

Spain?

France?

Portugal?

Dylan may speak to “a generation” but until anyone can understand what he is actually saying, there is no way to determine WHICH generation it was.

The only thing “runing America” are the dead-beat 60’s rejects who listen to talentless morons like Bob Zimmerman.

America disposed of slavery, and became the most color blind mixed race nation in the history of mankind.

Its the racial grievance industry, who obviously need to keep the rage alive, that has us at each others throats.

Its really not hard to understand.

Dylan may be right in a way he didn't even realize.

If slavery had never been allowed here, today there would not be the millions of black racist perpetual "victims" bleeding our economy, filling our prisons and destroying our culture. Detroit would still be a great city, for example.

The only black people here would be the ones who wanted to be here.

Note he said the “stigma” of slavery, not slavery itself.

By that, he could mean the “stigma” created by those who have exploited slavery for their own personal gain....the kind of people Booker T Washington warned us about that “don’t want the patient to get well.”

You and every other poster on this thread have failed to even examine what he is saying.

Bob Dylan is not a kneejerk leftist and was roundly criticized by the left for walking away from their cookie-cutter Red politics.

The guy is a student of history and of American culture, as well as being an important part of American culture in his own right.

His points are valid: the legacy of slavery has poisoned this country's political discourse for a very long time, the fact that slavery ended in a brutal war rather than being phased out is a tragedy that took an immeasurable toll of our country's best, and real change is not about government programs or elections but about personal behavior.

The quality of the discussion here is the type I would expect to find on DailyKos.

These people live in the past or projecting their hate on others.
This point can't be stressed enough. Beneath the thin skin of most libs is a level of bigotry that would embarass a klansman. And in light of the anniversary of 9/11, didn't those who practice the religion of peace have a monopoly on the Black slave trade?

Black people in this country can be very proud of themselves as can just about every other ethnic group that has come and prospered in our free society.

It is beyond belief for me, how black people in this country can be so bamboozled by the democrats. I relish listening to conservative black Americans who understand what is the truth. ‘

One fact that seems to escape the Bob Dylans out there is the fact that the no 1 cause of death in the black community is abortion.

If slavery ruined America it’s because it precipitated the 14th amendment.

“Only 1% of whites owned slaves”

Is that true? I’ve heard it was about a third of southern states.

I guess he's pissed off so many of his former accolytes that he had to play the race card to be able to sell the new CD. The ones he's pissed off since the 90’s will all come rushing back to him now in spite of Neighborhood Bully. Either that or he's been watching too much TeeVee.

Well then Mr. Dylan, every country in the world has been ruined by something in their past. You’re wasting our time.
