Mitt Romney’s Remarks are Another Chick-Fil-A Moment
Red State ^ | 9/20/12 | Erick Erickson

Just a few months ago, Dan Cathy of Chick-Fil-A, gave an interview to a Christian publication that asked him about the Chick-Fil-A Foundation’s support of marriage. Cathy defending his position and spoke about his family’s faith. CNN.com picked it up and ran a story that Cathy had come out against gay marriage.

In fact, Cathy hadn’t been asked directly about gay marriage, but it was implicit in what he said. The CNN.com story swirled around the internet. Leftwingers and media mouthpieces across the country condemned Chick-Fil-A for serving bigotry on a bun. Suddenly the most controversial thing in America was two buttered buns and a pickle. Mayors were demanding Chick-Fil-A not come to their cities. Liberals were screaming about intolerance and bigotry.

Then Mike Huckabee and others declared a Chick-Fil-A Day. On the appointed day, lines of cars stretched around city blocks. Lines of people stretched across parking lots. Turns out a lot of people agreed with Dan Cathy. But it also turned out a lot of people who did not agree, but were not offended and showed up to support Chick-Fil-A.

A counter protest was held — a so called “kiss in.” Few people showed up.

The Chick-Fil-A controversy animated a whole lot of people. It just turned out that the people it most animated were the people who agreed with Dan Cathy.

So it is, I think, with Mitt Romney’s comments. I think the media and the left have badly misread the American mood on this. On CNN yesterday, I spent a fair amount of time with Kate Bolduan and Joe Johns, two of my favorite people. They kept focusing on Mitt Romney’s characterization of the word “victims.”

The polling out today on the 47% issue seems to be backing up Romney.

Gallup: Only 36% (Dem base) said the statement made them less likely to vote for Romney.

Rasmussen: 64% say Americans receive too much govt aid. 36% (same Dem base) disagree.

Why are people surprised? It is simple math. 53% is higher than 47%. 53% or more like hearing that Mitt Romney will do something about getting the moochers and freeloaders off of their backs! The 53% are pissed that they have to work harder to pay for everyone else.

Maybe it’s wishful thinking on my part, but surely, some of those 47% have truly fell on hard times and are busting their you-know-whats trying to find work and get off public assistance.

By now everyone has heard the infamous Mitt Romney speech discussing the “47%” if primarily in the context of how this impacts his political chances, and how it is possible that a president “of the people” can really be a president “of the 53%.” Alas, there has been very little discussion of the actual underlying facts behind this statement, which ironically underestimates the sad reality of America’s transition to a welfare state. Recall Art Cashin’s math from a month ago that when one adds the 107 million Americans already receiving some form of means-tested government welfare, to the 46 million seniors collecting Medicare and 22 million government employees at the federal, state and local level, and “suddenly, over 165 million people, a clear majority of the 308 million Americans counted by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2010, are at least partially dependents of the state.”

Yup. Mitt’s 47% remark is scandalous - but the fact that obamam only attends about 43% of his DAILY SECURITY BRIEFINGS - and ignored warnings/common sense re 9/11, no marines - or where there were some no bullets...

not important

Not wishful thinking I would say certainly many without jobs today and getting assistance DO NOT want to stay in that condition. A good number of them will be on Romney’s side because when they are employed again, they do not want to pay for those not willing to work.

Using Chick-Fil-A and Romney in the same sentence may remind people of Romney brave and bold defense of free speech during the controversy “It is not part of my campaign,”’

I'm sure what you're saying is true - lots of good people are demoralized by this horrible economy - but democrat incentives favor people becoming dependent. The don't favor people working and having intact families.

Broken dependent citizens ARE the dem base...

What our side wants is jobs for people so they can live better. And if help is needed the kind of help that adds dignity to the struggle - help that gets people back on their feet.

This economy sucks. Obama's making it worse.

Obama's clueless about how to create jobs. If he knew, he would have done it. He only knows how to redistribute - and that's sick.

I’m in the 47$ and for Romney, I guess. (I’m more against Obama than for Romney).

The child tax credit is a scam.

That 47$ is supposed to be 47%. Bad typing + bad eyesight = bad typo.
