MICHIGAN CITY Four thousand dollars worth of Walmart gift certificates is a small price to pay to make Michigan City a safer place to live. That is a rough estimate at how much was given out in the 2011 gun drive, organized by the Michigan City Police Department.
Last year, 78 guns were turned in to police during the drive, which was first organized in 2006, MCPD Public Relations spokesman Sgt. Chris Yagelski said.
"Prior to the gun drive, we would destroy the guns turned in to us or ordered destroyed by the court," Yagelski said.
The first year was an overwhelming success, and it has continued to grow. The guns are put into a square column, bulletproof display case in the lobby of the police station. Yagelski said the display is somewhat of an attraction and will stay with the police department for years to come.
Anyone who turns in a gun during the drive receives a $50 Walmart gift card. Rifles and shotguns earn $25.
