Charles Martel, the leader of the Franks forces (including Germanic tribes), defeated a Saracen force of about 80,000 Moslems in Tours, October 732. Martel’s grandson was Charlemagne.

Martel “the Hammer” decisively defeated abd-ar-Rahman and his loot-laden forces in a long, one-day battle and drove them back beyond the Pyrennes where they stayed until ousted by the Spanish many years later.

See: “Twenty Decisive Battles of the World”, Lt. Col. Joseph B. Mitchell and Sir Edward Creasy, KK (Konecky & Konecky) 72 Ayers Point Rd., Old Saybrook, Ct. 06475, 1964, ISBN: 1-56852-458-7

Now you know why I haunted Borders and Barnes & Noble bookstores, for good history books on remainder.
