French Nationalist Politician Calls for Ban on Jewish Kippah as Well as Muslim Headscarf

The leader of France’s far-right nationalist party, Marine Le Pen, is calling for a ban not only of Muslim headscarves but also the wearing of the kippah – or Jewish skullcap – in public.

In an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde, Le Pen called for religious headwear to be banned “in stores, on public transport and on the streets.”

AFP reports on this latest controversy over religious tolerance in France, already rocked once in recent days by the publishing of offensive drawings depicting the Muslim Prophet Muhammad in X-rated positions:

Asked whether the ban should apply to the Jewish skullcap, known as the kippah or yarmulke, as well as Muslim headwear, she said: “It is obvious that if the veil is banned, the kippah is banned in public as well.”

Le Pen, who shocked the French elite by winning almost 18% in the first round of this year’s presidential vote, also repeated calls for bans on public prayers, kosher and halal foods in schools and foreign government financing of mosques in France.

President Francois Hollande denounced her comments, saying: “Everything that tears people apart, opposes them and divides them is inappropriate, and we must apply the rules, the only rules that we know, the rules of the Republic and secularism.”

Condemnation from France’s Jewish and Muslim leaders also came quickly:

Well then, let's force some of the smelly types over there to take a shower every day. THAT really tears people apart.

If we tried that over here the entire Occupy movement would be in jail.

Does this also mean that Catholic nuns will not be allowed to wear their habits in public?

Think before you speak Marine. Will she be calling for nuns not to wear their religious habits or priests and pastors not to wear any clerical identifiable clothing? What is offensive about a kippah? Even a lot of the Muslim garb doesn’t bother me —except full length over the top burqas. (cause there might be a man with a bomb under there)

Well.....national daily showering enforcement will impact the lives of most French people, not just muzzies.

It wasn’t muzzies who invented the bidet.

Next they will ban all crosses or stars of David on Jewelry. Maybe a simple uniform for all might be the wave of the future. All equally dressed!

It absolutely does mean that nun's habits and other religious clothing will be banned, just like in anti-clerical (meaning anti-Catholic) Mexico.

And that's what's wrong with this legislation. It specifically opposes the free exercise of religion as a public threat. That's a mistake. They should oppose the covering of the face, tout court ---- whether by full Muslim veriling of women, Guy Fawkes disguises, balaclavas, or Halloween masks --- as a public threat.

Kippas, sikh turbans, berets, hair-scarves should have nothing to do with it. It's the practice of concealing personal identity --- ther FACE ---- via FACE-covering, that undermines public security.

Anything that blocks proper identification should be subject to being addressed.

Anything that doesn’t, shouldn’t.

What we see here is another attempt to bend over backwards so it won’t look like the followers of Islam are being singled out, when they are the problem and nobody else is.

Address the problem, and leave the rest of us alone.

Good Lord, Western leaders have gone stark raving nuts.

Nachum, I already posted this story
The original thread with my comment:

To all FReepers: I have been warning you about Marine Le Pen, the daughter of neo-fascist Jean -Marie Le Pen for years, since I first began this Ping list. She is her father in drag.
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. MLP is no kind of conservative; she is a totalitarian Statist anti-Semite and her party, the National Front, is nothing more than gussied up National Socialism.

France has no First Amendment guaranteeing freedom of religion and the free exercise thereof.

To the earlier poster: crosses and stars of David are banned if seemed to be “ ostentatious” religious displays.

I collect crosses and wear one every day. Come and get me Hollande!

I recently got back from France.

I admit wearing a normal hat over my kippah, mainly because I was riding the trains and didn’t want to have a fist fight every day.
