REBEL EVOLUTION (advance copy) Thought-provoking new film by AnnaZ w/ Brandon Darby, BILL AYERS (!)

From www.rebelevolution.org:

Brandon Michael Darby
(excerpted from a 2010 article by Matthew Vadum)

You've probably never heard of Brandon Darby.

The former community organizer who saved American lives by undermining a left-wing terrorist plot at the 2008 Republican convention used to be a proud member of the radical left.

He called for the overthrow of the U.S. government. He hated cops. He consorted with eco-terrorist tree-spikers, radical feminists and black nationalists. He was approached to rob an armored car and asked to commit arson to fight gentrification. He mouthed politically correct slogans about the Bush administration. Government didn't care about people, and he thought the botched response to Katrina proved it.

When he learned people were suffering in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, he moved there, defying police orders not to enter the stricken city. With $50 he co-founded Common Ground Relief in the home of a former Black Panther. Despite many obstacles, Common Ground alleviated some suffering in the devastated city, especially the hard-hit Ninth Ward. The group gutted flood-damaged houses and provided free health care and meals. In its first three years it accommodated 22,000 volunteers.

Gradually Darby began to question his political beliefs. After initially having rocky relations with the New Orleans police, he came to realize that they were all on the same side because they wanted to help people.

"Everybody else [in Common Ground] remained with this protest, 'fight the power' deal but I started developing relationships with people in the power structure in the city and in different levels of government so my ideas started to really change," he told "This American Life." "I was, 'Why are we wearing masks and protesting? I mean we should go meet with them. I have the mayor's cell phone number. I eat dinner with their families. Why are we acting this way?'"

After years of in-your-face protests and confrontational tactics, Darby rejected the radical left and its culture of political violence. He came to realize that America, for all its faults, wasn't such a bad place after all.

REBEL EVOLUTION (advance copy) Thought-provoking new film by AnnaZ w/ Brandon Darby, BILL AYERS (!)

From www.rebelevolution.org:

William "Bill" Ayers

When I told Mr. Ayers upon our meeting that I had read his wikipedia page as prep work for our interview, he just laughed. But here it is.

The former Weather Underground leader-slash-"domestic terrorist" gave us his time and his reflections on an almost half-century of trying to change the world.

Several OTHER very good FRiends of this forum are also interviewed in AnnaZ's new film.

From www.rebelevolution.org:

Ted Hayes

A Los Angeles activist for the homeless for years, among a host of other projects, Ted has gone from being a bodyguard for Black Panther leader H. Rap Brown, to being a passionate patriot and advocate for self-improvement in his community.

Here's his wiki... he's a treat.

With us, he discusses his passions, his turnaround, and his dreams of racial reconciliation for America.

. . .

Alfonzo Rachel

Showman, musician, martial artist, and conservative vlogger, "Zo" has made a name for himself by defying all that was expected, and demanded, of him.

. . .

Kevin DuJan

The highly passionate chief blogger for hillbuzz.org discusses his painful second coming-out... as a converted conservative in Chicago's ultra-liberal Boystown.

When I saw the list of folks you were interviewing for this, my first thought was “Shoot! Another f’n waste of time!” But I (bravely) turned it on, and had to break in here and tell you that the one comment from H. Rap Brown at 0:39.1 is worth the whole thing. That it still goes on today by those same folks in the same place in the same way is an absolute failure of our civilization.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, AnnaZ!
Thank you, RonDog, for posting this and the links.

What a truly remarkable film and tribute to freedom and the power of the individual to promote and defend it.

Through the personal journeys of these people, we're reminded that freedom isn't free and requires enormous courage to preserve.

The vileness of the murderous Bill Ayers and his confused and sophomoric musings provides a great counter-point. It was genius to include him.

I've noticed that you haven't been around here for a couple of years, AnnaZ.

Don't know why, but I'm thrilled to see that your great work continues.

Best to you and thanks for producing this wonderful film.

AnnaZ very kindly allowed me to preview her film the day before its official release. (Thank you, Anna!) She was (unjustly) nervous about how it would be received and wanted some feedback. I think she meant it as a figure of speech but she asked me to give her a review ... so I did. Here is my review and I meant every word of it.

I think you have done a wonderful job. You have incorporated too many points (in a subtle and masterful way) for me to speak to them all. Your editing leads the viewer smoothly and clearly through the evolution of thought of a radical leftist activist to their awakenings to a conservative POV.

Setting that journey against the contrasts of Ayers’ non-evolution of thought (good grief that man is a slug of an intellect) and Zo’s early awakening to logic and common sense (making him less a convert and more a continually awakening man of reason) gave the film a very rounded perspective on how various individuals awaken to reason (or never do in Ayers’ case) and how that reason naturally finds itself more comfortable with a conservative world view and among those who embrace it.

I was also struck with how comfortable your subjects were and how you elicited very honest responses from them relatively free of self-promotion and agenda-promotion. Without being leading or aggressive you illustrated your main points very effectively, IMO, and created a compelling storyline, with beginning, middle and end, into a documentary format.

Bravo!

Thanks for posting the pic of Jim Thompson with admirers, there, RonDog. Appreciate it.

Anna, if your feature runs 80+ minutes, I think you could call it feature-length now rather than a "two-reeler" or "three-reeler". I noticed two B- and A-list Hollywood efforts among the recent releases that came in at 81-83 minutes only. More that tilted the scales at 90-93 minutes. You may remember Jurassic Park III (my informal working title: Please Eat Tea Leoni!) a few years ago; that one was timecoded at 93 minutes.

Best of luck, Anna, and like they said -- "break a leg!"
