Ryan’s Debate Strategy
National Review ^ | 10-15-12 | Bob Costa

Did Paul Ryan prepare for Biden’s bluster?

You bet, his aides say, and they credit Ted Olson, a former United States solicitor general, for coaching the Republican veep candidate.

For weeks, the 72-year-old Olson played Biden during mock debates. During intense 90-minute sessions, Olson mimicked every mannerism of the vice president, from his hand gestures to his sneer.

If the current polling is any indication, Biden’s debate performance moved the needle.

Further in Romney’s direction.

Wisconsin Ryan debaate prep review

FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.

I had momentarily forgotten that, as a former staffer to Sen. Bob Kasten, Ryan was all too familiar with the rudenss and bluster of Joe Biden. I don’t think anyone mentioned that in the run up to the debate. In addition to being a really nice guy, I’m glad that Ryan had a secret weapon in his pocket.

I think it was a brilliant performance on the part of Ryan. He had to avoid sinking to Biden’s level without appearing to be intimidated. He threaded that needle about as skillfully as it could have been done.

Joey Buffoon’s clownish, debate performance was the Mother of All Exploding Cigars. Now it’s America’s turn to laugh.

Ryan’s debate strategy was simple.

Competence while ignoring the obnoxious child.

Biden’s jackassery definitely seemed to turn women off.

However, I bet Ryan could’ve scored some serious points with the ladies if, after one of Biden’s interruptions, he’d zapped him with a pink Taser then continued the debate shirtless.

I assumed they dragged in a drug adled bafoon off the streets to prep Ryan.

Olson was fourth on the list to imitate Biden, but Cesar Romero and Heath Ledger were both dead and Jack Nicholson has put the role behind him.

Men are +12 Romney. Women are EVEN.

Obama had a +12 women in 2008.

It looks like women are breaking for Romney...thanks to Biden.

I was shocked by the number of people on the Live Thread here on FR who were making negative comments about Ryan's performance.

I thought he was just great.

Ted Olsen is a good man and smart too. R/R showed its intelligence once again

About 15 minutes into the debate my wide turned to me and said ‘Biden is and ass and women will hate him’. Don’t tell her I said it but she was right.

Ted Olson and Paul Ryan are cut from the same cloth - brilliant and able to adapt. It certainly paid off.

Now - just try to imagine John F’n Kerry playing the role of a Republican!

He may have prepared but he wasn’t ready. He should have called out Biden and the moderator during the debate to put a stop to it. “You know Joe, I understand that you are very passionate about your misguided positions, but common courtesy would dictate that you stop rudely interrupting my responses”.

Of course he was under intense pressure and because of his relative lack of experience in such circumstances perhaps didn’t realize that non-partisan, objective observers understood that Biden had crossed the line and that his rebuke would therefore be viewed positively.

Well, if we assume the electorate is 50-50 male/female, that puts Romeny up by +6 if true. Hard to believe, given the other polls showing things significantly closer. But, I'll take it!
