What's a Christian business owner supposed to do?

My parents founded Tyndale House Publishers 50 years ago as a Christian publishing company. From the very beginning we have published Bibles, and we also publish a wide range of other Christian books. Our corporate purpose is “to minister to the spiritual needs of people, primarily through literature consistent with biblical principles.”

I’ve always thought—in a theoretical way—that I might someday face a situation where the government was asking or telling me to do something that was counter to God’s law as I understood it. If such a situation arose, I hoped I would have the backbone to stand tall and disobey the government mandate. Well, that day seems to have come.

As a side note, what makes Tyndale's case even more complicated is its dividends from the profitable operations of the publishing company flow to its non-profit foundation, which has received $38.8 million of Tyndale's $40.2 million in distributed profits. The remaining percent of Tyndale's shares, just over 3.4 percent, are owned by two Illinois trusts that benefit the founder's widow and children.

With respect to taxes, which is what Jesus was talking about, I've come to believe that our system is evil; it is Cesar taking what is not his: the wages of the hireling, before the hireling has even received them.

Caesar doesn’t have any right to order his subjects to kill babies, or otherwise too disobey God’s clear laws.

And, incidentally, to disobey the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, which declare that the right to life is a God-given right, never to be violated.
