Not long ago I was reading a 19th century article written by a black woman-—a former slave. She had been illiterate for a large part of her life before finally being taught to read and write. That woman’s writing was perfectly articulate, expressive, and distinct.

Yet today’s blacks, who grow up with free education from age 5 or so, can’t manage a single intelligible sentence.
