ALLEN WEST SEES GAIN IN VOTES IN ONE FLA. COUNTY — INCHES CLOSER TO AUTOMATIC ELECTION-WIDE RECOUNT

Mainstream media reports notwithstanding, the Allen West-Patrick Murphy race is far from over, according to a volunteer lawyer with the campaign. Voting irregularities abound in what has shaped up to be one of the most hotly contested congressional races of the 2012 campaign.

On Sunday, the West campaign saw a net gain of 535 votes for Congressman West in a re-feed of early ballots in St. Lucie County, roughly 43.5% of the total ballots cast in the conservative Florida county.

“That’s only two votes shy of the number of votes that President George W. Bush won the American presidency with in 2000,” said Jeffrey Scott Shapiro, a volunteer lawyer for the West campaign. Over 800 votes went “missing” in Sunday’s count and of those 800, eighty percent of them had previously gone to West’s challenger, Patrick Murphy. The West campaign likes those odds.

On Saturday, Florida had released an unofficial result showing Murphy with a lead of 2,442 votes, or 50.4 percent—a narrow lead which makes his count just beyond the half-percent margin mandated for an automatic recount.

“We only need another 249 votes to trigger a statutory recount of the total of hundreds of thousands of votes cast in this race,” Shapiro explained. “For the media to suggest Allen West has already lost this race is not only irresponsible, it’s untrue. The media needs to stop projecting what it wants to happen and start reporting the facts of what is actually happening.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if a statutory recount shifted the final numbers,” he added. “We only recounted the early vote portion for three days in one county today, which was about five percent of the total votes cast in this race. The numbers shifted in the hundreds when we’re only about 1,800 votes behind to win. More important than victory however, is democracy. Everyone deserves to have their voice heard and their vote counted. Something is fundamentally flawed with the media when it creates the impression that recounting the votes is unnecessary.”

Shapiro doubts that the canvassing board in St. Lucie County is doing its due diligence.

“The Canvassing Board in St. Lucie County misled the public,” he said. “They said they would recount all 37,379 early votes, but instead they only recounted 16,275 early votes from November 1, 2 and 3rd. Still, out of the 43.5 percent of early votes they recounted we picked up a net gain 535 votes. If they recounted the remaining 56.5 percent, there’s very little question we’d pick up the 249 we need to trigger a statutory recount.”

“I never experienced the kind of obstructionist tactics and hostility when I was serving on John Kerry’s presidential election team in 2004,” Shapiro added. “I was impressed with the system despite its flaws, but I’m starting to realize that there’s a big difference when you’re a member of the same party as the supervisor of elections than when you’re with the opposition. What I’ve seen these past few days has caused me to lose some faith and confident in the integrity of the democratic process.”

The race was the country’s most expensive House contest, with over $21 million raised. West is among the most prolific fundraisers in Congress.

A very different thing to claim that the Presidential election of the entire country is fraudulent and must be re-counted state by state where there are any questions.

Perhaps one of the oddest moments of all during last night's live election coverage was what happened to Karl Rove on Fox Network News.

With Florida still too close to call and hundreds of thousands of votes still out in Ohio (including a large hunk of votes in Romney strongholds), and with a spread of about 100,000 votes separating the candidates in Ohio, Fox called Ohio for Obama. Karl Rove arranged to come on the Fox network to voice his rebuttal.

Now, whatever you think of Rove, I think most of us agree that he's a numbers guy. His numbers didn't support the calling of the state of Ohio at that point in time. When he explained his reasoning, the Fox anchor quickly shut him down. "It's a science" he was told.

Based not on actual votes, but on projections from a single private entity, the National Election Pool (NEP), we were all told what the election results were going to be. When Rove pulled out his notes and calculations, he was basically told "Shut up, this is a science."

But is that what your vote really is? A science project, to be viewed only by experts inside a nesting set of black boxes, completely out of public view?

If we are to have real self-governance, we need to be able to authenticate each essential step in our own elections -- without need for special expertise to explain to us what the result is. What more centralized, privatized form of declaring a result is there than to commission the NEP to provide a single set of statistics to ALL of the TV networks for a declaration of results without human eyes ever looking at a single ballot.

The media called the election in Tennessee just 11 minutes after the polls closed and by the way, exit polls had already been cancelled in Tennessee because, it was explained, everyone already knew who the winner was going to be so why bother with the expense. Even the voting machines, opaque and controlled by whatever their programmers put into them, had not yet issued results printouts. Is this the new, NEW method for pretending at democracy?

Washington State, where I live, is a forced absentee state, where 100% of the votes are now absentee ballots, which must be postmarked on Election Day. I placed my ballot in the post office at 2 pm. There are no exit polls, because there are no polling places. Apparently a few phone calls now substitute for actual exit polling (to people with land lines? That's an increasingly elderly demographic). Perhaps 40% of all ballots in Washington have not even been counted yet, but we've been told the results.

In California, typically 25% of the votes are counted after Election Day, yet results have been announced. That's a million uncounted ballots in Los Angeles alone. We have no clue what is on those ballots but we've been told not to worry about it. The stats guys have issued their verdict.

Forget voting machines, programmed by insiders to do whatever they do. Let's just skip counting the votes altogether and use statistics.

Go spend the ninety minutes to watch Hacking Democracy where HBO followed Bev Harris as she discovered "When you can't control the Politicians or the voters, then you control the counting! Go back to paper votes and we will have a President that was voted in!" - I guarantee it will piss you off!

This race has me heartened, disheartened, heartened and very puzzled and angered by the fact that Florida has a Republican Governor and Republicans have solid control of its House and Senate yet there seems to be no evidence that any Republican from the top on down is making any effort to assist Colonel West in securing a necessary and fair recount. I recall images of groups of Democrats regularly trooping en masse to picturesque steps and sidewalks throughout the country in loud, vocal protest of anything that Republicans have done. Where the Hell are Florida Republicans in this battle?? Is there no one to mobilize them to denounce all the obvious election irregularities in Florida? If they do NOTHING to help a hero like Colonel West, what the Hell good are they??? Their inaction is a disappointing outrage!!!!!
