Don't you remeber that Obama wanted tax hikes this year and Boehner wouldn't give them to him? Obama wanted a "grand bargain" but it fell apart because Boehner refused to budge.

Boehner Says No

Yes, he did stand tall at that moment, and he deserves credit. I do fault him for the convoluted debt deal that resulted, though. The whole super committee, the resulting mess we are dealing with now. Politically, that was the beginning of Obama’s relelection because got painted as the unreasonable party..and got little to blame for a lot of political capital. Our side was so afraid to face the shutdown type atmosphere of the 90s that we basically got nothing in the whole process, gave Obama a second political life and now a second term.

I am not overall a great critic of Boehner because he’s always been a solid congressman, and lives up to his promises. He’s just the wrong person for the job. We need a great communicator. Boehner is not that. I would much prefer different leadership.

The GOP is always painted as the unreasonable party no matter what. I guarantee you 9 out of 10 don't even know what went on in that deal.

What got Obama re-elected wasn't one deal. It was the freebies the Dems are giving out that put him over the top.

Boehner held the line back then on not raising taxes. It made Obama furious, but the Speaker DID live up to his word.
