If it was me? I'd spend $300/$400 or whatever and talk to my lawyer.

I'd also let HR know that I had turned to question over to counsel, and I will respond when I hear back from him.

It's very important to not let burro-craps bully you into anything, and let them know they won't.

But if they have law and regulation on their side, and your job is at risk, then it's a gut check.

I can walk away from pretty much any situation, but some folks have mortgages, payments, etc... and can't do that.

Asking questions instead of telling them to get bent is probably a good idea. ;)

you aren’t going to break off anything, that will get you exactly nowhere. You are on the government payroll and better say how high when they say jump. They are exempt from suit and you, unfortunately, are powerless.
