U.S. military spy drone can see what type of phone you're carrying from 17,500ft

A sinister airborne surveillance camera gives the U.S. military the ability to track movements in an entire city like a real-time Google Street View.

The ARGUS-IS array can be mounted on unmanned drones to capture an area of 15 sq/miles in an incredible 1,800MP - that's 225 times more sensitive than an iPhone camera.

From 17,500ft the remarkable surveillance system can capture objects as small as 6in on the ground and allows commanders to track movements across an entire battlefield in real time.

I think it was the movie “Conspiracy Theory” with Gene Hackman - and the Govt. is trying to figure out who he is - and tracking every move. Paraphrased IIRC:

“Come on - look up! That stupid hat he’s wearing!!”

“What - you can’t see his face?”

“No you idiot - it’s from a satellite!”

“Well - if you can’t see his face, what good is it? That’s pretty lame.”

All of that said, I imagine if they wanted to they can just follow the signal on your smartphone. I just bought my first one and most everything requires answering yes to “Can we use your current position?” in order to work. That will be the first thing to go.

System does not have nearly a large enough effective aperture using visible light to distinguish a cell phone type or even discriminate between a phone or type of another device. In fact, the phone would fall within a single pixel.

That they can see what type of phone I’m carrying?

I don't think what they showed on the NOVA show would do that, but they probably have better stuff than they show us.

What they did show was impressive, It is somewhat like the "Person of Interest" TV show, but all from above.

It is a shame that we have to be afraid of a government that can see everything we do, but we lose the fear of God who knows our every thought.

I don't think they can see what type of phone I’m carrying through cloud cover. Secret technology included.
