Warning or not, there is not much you can do to stop a suicide bomber from killing a gate guard. By definition that is the perimeter where physical security starts. One has to assume there are all kinds of intelligence reports saying that an embassy is going to be attacked. What would we do other than close all the embassies?

And besides, "What difference does it make now?"

Hillary, is that you?

No, seriously: You are right in pointing out that a small-scale attack of this kind was not the sort of thing that intelligence people can be expected to anticipate. Further, as lamentable as the death of the one guard and the civilian woman is, there was apparently no breach of the security perimeter.

Have you ever walked by the Israeli Embassy in DC and seen a man standing out front with a long trench coat on even in 90 degree weather. Let me tell you that bulge under his coat isn’t there because he is happy to see me.

“What would we do other than close all the embassies?”

I always assumed you had an intelligence community so that you'd never HAVE to close embassies.

If US intelligence types can't figure out the price of a cup of coffee in downtown Tehran... then they shouldn't BE in the intelligence business.

At that point you can buy your intel from someone else and give up being a world power. This is a very conscious decision Liberals made long ago and it's the primary reason I could never support a Liberal President. EVER! THEIR idea of leadership and foreign policy is way to infantile and gullible. They would have an 'intelligence community' of Kumbaya beatniks who can't get their hands dirty or offend ANYONE.
