Why did the feds have to be involved in the first place?

Thank the Lindburgh baby. In the wake of the kidnapping, the federal government granted itself jurisdiction in cases of kidnappers crossing state lines. In addition, individual states also passed “little Lindburgh Laws” ceding jerisdiction to the FBI and all kidnappings. Plus, a state can ask for FBI intervention. I’m not at which level this happens at, but the FBI brings experience and resourses that a state may not have.
