Ex-LAPD officer-turned-fugitive Christopher Dorner, who went on a deadly shooting rampage and then died after a shootout and fire last week, first tried to charm fishermen in San Diegos Driscoll Wharf into giving him a ride to Mexico, sources told NBC 7.
Authorities searched for Dorner all over Southern California -- from Irvine to National City -- and led extensive checkpoints at the San Ysidro border, believing Dorner was trying to flee into Mexico.
Fishermen at Driscoll Wharf told NBC 7 exclusively that Dorner was on the pier near Nimitz and Harbor Island Drive on Feb. 5 trying to charm his way into a boat ride to Mexico.
He kept saying he wanted to go fishing off Mexico. I said Mexico? Thats kinda weird. You could go fishing on the bay, said Jeremy Smith, a commercial fisherman.
Smith spoke exclusively with NBC 7 on Saturday night.
Smith and others at the dock said Dorner was willing to pay $200 to $400 for someone to take him out to sea. He told the fishermen he was going to be deployed to Afghanistan and just wanted to go fishing in Mexico first.
But at this pier, far away from popular fishing charters, most people were making repairs on their boats, not ready to go to sea.
Smith offered to show him around a luxury yacht that was for sale docked at the pier. But he asked him to remove the military style boots Dorner was wearing to keep the white carpeting clean. Dorner declined.

In before the “Cris P. Dorner” jokes!
It seems strange that he was so unprepared. Nothing he did really shows evidence of a serious escape plan.
Nothing strange about it. He was a delusional goofball. Undiagnosed schizophrenic, I think.
That’s an odd story. That pier is more than 20 miles from the border by land. Why didn’t he just drive his truck down down there? If he thought the heat was on, he could have driven east to cross at Los Algodones or San Luis, less than four hours away. Or he could have hopped a fence in Jacumba, Calif., about an hour away.
That is writings were just BS.
Wait for the movie, Hollywood will try to make a hero out of him. That is as close as he will ever come to it.
Dorner appears to have been no more competent at being a super-operator than Obama is at being President.

Your wait is over:

I know right? I kept thinking the same thing the whole time CNN was trying to turn this moron into Rambo. That silly girl Anderson Cooper kept throwing around the words “sniper training” like a five year old that just learned a naughty word.
Yes, clearly this man was a deadly sniper! All sniper training starts with making sure you know to set fire to your vehicle in a remote area when you could easily have pushed it to the side of the road and given yourself a week or two before it was noticed! Obama voter logic!
Based on how LAPD shoots and hits their target(ex blue PU), Doner was a sniper.
Yep. I have to say that I was very surprised indeed to see that he holed up in that place in Big Bear for like four days straight. Doesn’t look like he had any plan to go back to LA, or at that point, any plan at all.
So who really shot the cops in Corona and Riverside?
I assume — Dorner.

Good one!
I agree, I think he was very nuts.
Even Eric Rudolph stayed in hiding for over 5 years. This guy had a lot more training and knowledge than Rudolph. He should have been able to stay out of sight for years and years, supporting himself by muggings and robberies, while waiting for a chance at a multi-million theft. Then completely drop out of sight and snipe an occasional LA cop. A career death toll in the thousands.
