Pakistan's Ambassador to U.S. Sherry Rehman accused of blasphemy

ISLAMABAD One of Pakistan's top-ranking diplomats, Ambassador to the U.S. Sherry Rehman, is the latest person to be accused of blasphemy in her home country under harsh laws that include a possible death sentence for anyone convicted of defaming the Islamic prophet.

A senior government official in Lahore, provincial capital of Punjab province, confirmed to CBS News that a case of blasphemy had been registered with the police in the city of Multan against Rehman, a former journalist who was assigned to the Washington post in 2011.

The case promises to unleash another clash between conservative Muslims who vehemently back the country's Islamic laws, and those who dare to challenge them as outdated and in need of reform.

The official, who agreed to speak to CBS News on the condition of anonymity as he was not permitted to discuss the details of the case publically, said the case was brought "in response to a private complaint from a businessman."

That businessman, 31-year-old Faheem Gill, accuses Rehman of making blasphemous remarks during a 2010 discussion on a Pakistani television channel. She has openly called for the blasphemy laws to be reformed, and has already faced death threats from Islamic hardliners for doing so.

Every time someone tries to drag them out of the swamp, they get pulled under for the death roll.

Why call it a clash between "conservative" Muslims who vehemently back the country's Islamic laws, and those who dare to challenge them as outdated?

The "conservative" Muslims want to control everyone's life. If you disagree with the "conservative" Muslim, you can expect violence or death against you, your family, or others they consider as your supporters.

This is not conservatism. A conservative wants limits on government power and the promotion of individual liberties and rights. Fear of government and/or mob violence is an intimidation factor most often seen by liberals.

Liberals advocate violence against bankers because they are wealthy and therefore create poverty.

Liberals advocate violence against car dealerships because they are polluters.

Liberals advocate violence against gun owners because they are violent.

Liberals advocate violence against military because they have guns.

Liberals advocate violence against restaurants because they make people fat.

Liberals advocate violence against almost any franchise because they are a symbol of capitalism and greed.

The list is almost endless and you would be hard pressed to find examples of conservatives advocating violence as a means to bully people.

The Muslims calling for the death of Ambassador Rehman are not conservative, the are liberal. If Ambassador Rehman advocates changing Pakistani law to allow more freedom of speech, that makes her a conservative.

This lady is destined to suffer the same fate as Benazir Bhutto. The Islamists don’t like women.

It's standard media shorthand to call who ever the 'bad guy' is a Conservative.

I remember when the Soviet Union was falling apart, the MSM in America called to die hard Commies over there Conservatives. It's laughable, but that's what they always do.
