There is perhaps no worse political disaster for the government of Cuba than the death of President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela. After the Soviet Union collapsed and ceased to subsidize the Castro regime, the government of Cuba went through a very difficult period. That is, until President Chávez picked up the tab. While the real amount of the subsidy is unknown, Venezuela does send more than 115,000 barrels of oil a day to the refinery at Cienfuegos and pays for tens of thousands of Cuban doctors and sports trainers who are deployed all over Latin America. The true amount is probably significantly north of five billion dollars a year. If there was anybody that could expect the very best Cuban medicine had to offer, it was the Castro's five billion dollar man. This makes the upcoming death of Chávez that much more embarrassing for the Castros, because the velocity at which the strongman has deteriorated is due in no small part to the incompetence of the Cuban doctors at Cimeq - the hospital of choice for the communist party leaders.

I wonder where the Cuban doctors studied? I wonder if they are up to date, and if they are on a par with contemporary outcomes?
I wonder precisely the type of cancer Chavez had, and what the expected outcome is, with the best treatments?
Or IOW did Chaves have a chance, even with the best doctors?
Then, they can have Michael Moore as well. Let’s give it a few more years.

Cuban medical treatment is in tiers. There are luxury ultra modern hospitals for foreigners and the elite, and a third world nightmare with no medicine bandages or toilet paper for everyone else.
Ordinary Cubans get medical treatment that would be considered good — in the 1950’s.
The Doctors, nurses, etc. are paid less than bartenders in resorts catering to tourists. They aren’t allowed to emigrate. Those very low salaries are the key to keeping costs down — that and little money for high-tech medicine. When Doctors are sent to other countries, their families are kept behind, to ensure that the doctors return.
Cuban medical care is actually quite good. You just don’t hear about it unless you go outside of the US.
Apparently he was better off without doctors. The doctors made the cancer untreatable. He would have done better by living a clean life and not stealing from others. At least then, he would have ended up in the right place.
And thus you have the main problem with big government. It has killed far more then it can ever save.
