Long-forgotten Filipino sultanate's quest for old land sparks deadly crisis in Malaysia

Although largely forgotten and dismissed as a vestige from a bygone era, Kiram's sultanate, once based in the southern province of Sulu, has sparked the biggest security crisis in Malaysia and the Philippines in decades -- early last month, he sent his younger brother with about 200 followers, dozens of them armed, by boat from southern Philippines to a village in Sabah state in neighboring Malaysia to claim the land the sultanate insists belongs to them.

A stunned Malaysia, which runs the frontier resource-rich region of timberlands and palm oil plantations as its second-largest federal state, poured in elite police and army troops and called in airstrikes to quell what it saw as an armed intrusion.

After weeks of sporadic clashes that killed 19 intruders and eight policemen, troops launched a full-scale assault Tuesday, codenamed "Operation Sovereign," but failed to account for most of the Filipinos, who according to the Kiram family were unhurt.

Sultan Sulu should have spoken up at the end of WWII when the UN was deciding who owned what.

Sounds like Muslims vs. Muslims. Let’s just hope they don’t manage to damage Phillipine/Malaysian relations in this stupid business. And let’s also hope that Obamanoid and Kerri stay out of it.

I'd love to have someone ask Kerry in a press conference about the "Sulu conflict" just to see if he makes a statement of support for Star Trek having a gay actor.

Well just darned ~ next thing you know the Faroese are going to get uppity and there goes Scotland and Norway under the yoke of the chief grammarian Venceslaus Ulricus Hammershaimb and his unindicted coconspirator Jón Sigurðsson.

Oh the horror.

This is an interesting development for a number of reasons.

Malaysia is, in many ways, more a confederation of different governments than a unified country. It consists of something like nine kingdoms and four republican territories with a federal government that has a rotating elective monarchy. Citizens of the Borneo territories are not citizens of the peninsular kingdoms or territories and require a passport.

Sabah had been the one Christian territory in Malaysia, but due to the jihad activities in the Philippines, hundreds of thousands of Filipino Muslims have been illegally immigrating into Sabah to avoid Filipino justice.

Now the illegals have reached critical mass.

They are trying to reestablish the Sulu Sultanate, which the Malaysian government does not recognize and which the Philippines regard only as an honorific and not a political reality.

It is unclear from the article whether the legitimate Kiram family is doing this, or an offshoot.

Thanks. I don’t think I’ve even heard about a Christian territory in Malaysia.

That changes the picture. Although there is little or no precedent in modern times for the US or the EU to come to the aid of Christians being persecuted by Muslims. If Obama weighs in, no doubt it will be in favor of the Muslim intruders.

I see the Sultanate is laying claim to the Spratlys, too...good luck with that against the PRC Navy. :)

The Filipino Muslims resident in Malaysia were probably also encouraged by the fact that the Philippine government recently ceded a huge amount of territory to the Islamists so they can have their own “Islamic state” without technically being separate. Of course, this is just a preliminary to their next demand, which will be for all the rest of the Philippines. And Malaysia.
