I recall a conversation I had with a local during one of my African assignments, regarding the endless succession of corrupt African leaders that had afflicted his country. When asked why such leaders seemed so pervasive throughout Africa, he seemed genuinely puzzled as to why anyone would have to ask. “It’s what they always do. It’s what they all do.” Natural as breathing air. Kleptocrats happen. And stupid people elect them. Twice. Welcome to the Third World.
That’s what the rats say when caught - and the media also. “They all do it”.
I suppose that’s supposed to make it ok.
