Are women equal to men? Are Jews equal to gentiles? Are blacks equal to Italians, Irish, Polish and other white people? The answer is probably a big fat no, and the pretense or assumption that we are equal -- or should be equal -- is foolhardy and creates mischief. Let's look at it.
Male geniuses outnumber female geniuses 7-to-1. Female intelligence is packed much closer to the middle of the bell curve, whereas men's intelligence has far greater variability. That means that though there are many more male geniuses, there are also many more male idiots. The latter might partially explain why more men are in jail than women.
Watch any Saturday afternoon college basketball game and ask yourself the question fixated in the minds of liberals everywhere: "Does this look like America?" Among the 10 players on the court, at best there might be two white players. If you want to see the team's white players, you must look at the bench. A Japanese or Chinese player is close to being totally out of the picture, even on the bench. Professional basketball isn't much better, with 80 percent of the players being black, but at least there's a Chinese player. Professional football isn't much better, with blacks being 65 percent. In both sports, blacks are among the highest-paid players and have the highest number of awards for excellence. Blacks who trace their ancestry to West Africa, including black Americans, hold more than 95 percent of the top times in sprinting.
By contrast, blacks are only 2 percent of the NHL's ice hockey players. But don't fret about black NHL underrepresentation. State underrepresentation is worse. Most U.S. professional hockey players were born in Minnesota, followed by Massachusetts. Not a single U.S. professional hockey player can boast of having been born and raised in Hawaii, Mississippi or Louisiana. Any way we cut it, there is simply no racial proportionality or diversity in professional basketball, football and hockey.
A more emotionally charged question is whether we have equal intelligence. Take Jews, for example. They are only 3 percent of the U.S. population. Half-baked theories of racial proportionality would predict that 3 percent of U.S. Nobel laureates are Jews, but that's way off the mark. Jews constitute a whopping 39 percent of American Nobel Prize winners. At the international level, the disparity is worse. Jews are not even 1 percent of the world's population, but they constitute 20 percent of the world's Nobel Prize winners.
There are many other inequalities and disproportionalities. Asian-Americans routinely score the highest on the math portion of the SAT, whereas blacks score the lowest. Men are 50 percent of the population, and so are women; yet men are struck by lightning six times as often as women. I'm personally wondering what whoever is in charge of lightning has against men. Population statistics for South Dakota, Iowa, Maine, Montana and Vermont show that not even 1 percent of their respective populations is black. By contrast, in Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi, blacks are over-represented in terms of their percentages in the general population. Pima Indians of Arizona have the world's highest known diabetes rates. Prostate cancer is nearly twice as common among black men as white men. Cervical cancer rates are five times higher among Vietnamese women in the U.S. than among white women.
Soft-minded and sloppy-thinking academics, lawyers and judges harbor the silly notion that but for the fact of discrimination, we'd be proportionately distributed by race across incomes, education, occupations and other outcomes. There is absolutely no evidence anywhere, at any time, that proportionality is the norm anywhere on earth; however, much of our thinking, many of our laws and much of our public policy are based upon proportionality's being the norm. Maybe this vision is held because people believe that equality in fact is necessary for equality before the law. But the only requirement for equality before the law is that one is a human being.
No we live in a race-gender-orientation based victim hiearchy and us white male hetros are at the bottom. Amazing we are even allowed to still vote.
I suspect there’s a lightning-golf correlation somewhere...
We are all born equal. Then it all goes downhill from there........
Back in the day, I used to use this analogy:
A Dodge viper and a 4x4 Dodge pickup both came with the same V10 engine. They could even be painted the same color. However, though they were “equal”, they were very different and designed for different purposes. A person with one of each could use either one to go to work or the grocery store. However, if he wanted to pick up hay and feed for his livestock, pull a trailer or go hunting in the backwoods accessible only by rough dirt roads, he’d probably use the pickup. If he wanted to take a road trip from Chicago to Seattle, or on an afternoon enjoying the twisties of Tennessee, the viper would be the better choice.
But our culture wants them to be “equal”. So it lowers the suspension on the truck and puts some tall rims with low profile tires and it jacks up the Viper to handle the rough roads and bolts a cute little truck bed to the back.
Now the truck can handle better but it is a lousy truck and a lousy sports car. And the Viper can now clear a 6” rock and carry a couple of bags of chicken feed, but it is a lousy sports car and a lousy truck.
And that is what our civilization is attempting to do: Redesign what God, in his infinite wisdom, designed.
As for me and my family, if I want to get in touch with my feminine side, I reach for my wife. And we make no apologies. I’m a MAN. And my wife is a WOMAN. And at 59 years old we enjoy that difference daily, and in everything we do and responsibilities we share.
Meanwhile, the “sportified pickups” and “truckified vipers” are miserable in their inability to identify who they are and approach life in a way that compliments their inherent design strengths.
Shhh. Don't give them any ideas.
G-d CREATED us as equal souls in His eyes.
I take that to mean that we each have equal value in His eyes.
What capabilities a person is endowed with varies greatly. That is the texture of humanity, and to be valued.
Capability differences help humanity. But differences don’t lead to equal outcomes.
Deal with it! Difference is part of G-d’s plan, which remains inscrutable to us mere mortals.
Whenever someone says there are more blacks in prison than whites because of racism, I like to sarcastically add, “Yeah, and there are more men in prison than women because of sexism!”
The logical acrobatics that follow are always comical.
And I suppose a teenage Asian girl is just as likely to be a discipline problem in a high school as a teenage black male...
The only equality afforded to humankind, is that we all, anywhere on this planet, “striped our shorts”, both man and woman, sometime in our life!
Therefore, I don’t bow to no man or woman, nor do my knees bend.
Excellent article. Williams always says profound things clearly, so even a liberal could understand.
I agree...or uphill
Well, that and women have sense enough to come in out of the rain...
Then what does it mean to be a man? It's a lot more than being born with the proper plumbing. For example, I don't consider that piece of excrement that recently shot that 13 month old baby in the head in front of his mother to be a man.
I also don't think that males who don't want to work, who can't speak properly, who don't take care of their kids, who can't wear the pants correctly, who like to sexually taken by other males, can be considered civilized men and do not deserve all the accoutrements and benefits our civilization provides.
This notion that person has rights WITHOUT responsibilities just because they are born here is as deadly to our civilization as this insane idea that a person is automatically an American because their momacita squeezed them out on the right side the border.
Remember what the Godfather said about the subject, "...a man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man."
Fair notice that I fully intend to steal this analogy. Well said, CL.
Another PING for Williams readers.
History has managed to turn the Founder’s idea that “All Men are Created equal” into a mandate for government to KEEP everyone that way.
“The logical acrobatics that follow are always comical.”

No doubt, those who try to live by the lie always have problems trying to create more lies to bolster the one they just told. People who persist in believing things because they are POLITICALLY CORRECT regardless of reality are only lying to themselves so the easiest way to short out their neurons is to resort to reductio ad absurdum.
Confront them with reason and they are soon repeating stock phrases like a broken record and accusing you of racism or insensitivity or some such monstrous sin. One supposed genius even told me that he didn’t CARE whether socialism ever worked, he wanted it anyway.
Equality of Opportunity has morphed into Equality of Outcome.
The Godfather was definitely on to something.
