Hard to tell if it’s sinister. The parachute accident was likely just an accident.

But, I am convinced that a former FReeper was on the ST-6 helicopter that crashed (shot down) in August 2011. He went silent just days before, after a very active posting history.

sad... my nephew (niece's husband) was a member of the Army's Golden Knights... he was part of the team when George H. W. Bush did his jump in Texas...

there was a major mid-air collision between two Golden Knights while my nephew was on the team... one member died, the other lost both his legs... awful... but it does happen... :(

No such thing as a coincidence.

The above might be the dumbest cliche ever.

The world is filled with meaningless coincidences.

Yes, It’s inconceivable that special forces operators constantly at the tip of the spear in dangerous combat missions and constantly going through realistic and dangerous training would ever get killed.

Seal Team 6 operators were getting killed long before the Bin Laden raid - it just wasn’t making the news and they weren’t being identified as SEALs in many cases, and definitely not as Team 6.

I've done my share of freefall, including time in Yuma, so I'll state the obvious...

Colliding in freefall is anything but routine, and never a good idea, docking in freefall on the other hand is-

Either the jumpers were wearing battle rattle or they were jumping Hollywood (sans combat gear.)

A high speed freefall collision is likely to be lethal, whether one is wearing a rigid helmet, a soft helmet, or no helmet.

A low speed freefall collision can also be lethal, but less likely if both jumpers are wearing rigid helmets, as opposed to soft helmets, or no helmets.

The closing speed in conjunction with body control is paramount, as is continuity (frequency) in training.

My instinct on this one is that someone flew their body out of the envelope of their skill level, colliding with a teammate, due to either being away from the craft for an extended period of time or misjudging their abilities for the particular slot or body position they were flying.

It's easy to do if you are a bit rusty and traveling earthward at 120 mph (belly to earth) and even more so when the speed is 180 mph - 220 mph (tracking/head down.)

Hopefully the deceased warrior was at the least unconscious on impact.

Lastly, the ground is impervious to one’s occupation, or mode of transportation (in getting there.)

First jump student- tragic

Decorated Navy Seal- tragic

RIP snake eater

Also, Seal Team 6 personnel is constantly changing. The guys on Team 6 now are not necessarily the same ones from the Bin Laden raid.

A sad coincidence. Even before Obama ever hit headlines Tier 1 and Tier 2 operators were dying during training - and it can be argued more have died in training than in combat in the last three decades. To be in a Tier 1 unit like Devgru or CAG requires some pretty life-like training, and it gets lethal at times. Same applies to Tier 2 units like the 'normal' SEAL teams and Army Special Forces.

Following the Bin Laden raid Devgru has hit the national media big-time, hence all the 'SEAL Team 6' stories. Anything happens it gets reported, when in the past it was never reported due to opsec (and anyways the media was never interested then). There are movies, magazine articles, books ....goodness, even a couple of former Devgru operators got in a spot of trouble over assisting a video game company make their game more realistic. By the way I am not hitting out at Devgru - simply saying they have become quite public in a way they weren't before, and some people in the special forces community have spoken against that publicity.

As an example, when was the last time you heard about CAG? The so called 'Delta Force' guys still maintain anonymity, and thus their could have been all sorts of mishaps that are simply never reported.

Anyways, Obama has nothing to do with this. This was an unfortunate incident that claimed the life of a brave American who was the closest thing to Superman this side of Krypton. May he rest in peace, and God bless others like him.

I don’t remember the source but I understand the death rate in training dropped when the army & marines went into actual combat duing Desert Storm.

During the Cold War, training deaths numbered in the thousands annually, think 35 and 45 dead a week.

Oh, come now. In 1970 I went through dangerous training and it WAS that : Dangerous training. As a dumb newbie I was laying around and a young Sergant said “ Ain’t you worried?” I said “Why? Ten thousand people went through this before me and nobody got killed.” He said “Wanna bet?”
