The cockpit fire axe has a spike on one end and would have been something readily available.

From what I remember the hole was larger than a .45 and was about the size of the spike on the fire axe.

Reckon they were able to punch a perfect hole while leaving a perfect bone plug with a fire ax? Also, the hole was inward beveling, the ax would leave an outward bevel. The slaughter house punch accounts for both but doesn't address the 'lead snowstorm' visible on the x-rays.

Let's face it we will never know since it has been completely covered up and most people just look puzzled when you mention Ron Brown anymore.
