Woman leads closing prayer at Mormon conference (First time)
Associated Press ^ | 4-6-2013 | MICHELLE L. PRICE

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — For the first time in the event's 183-year history, a woman has led a prayer at the semiannual gathering of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Jean A. Stevens led the morning session's closing prayer Saturday for the more than 100,000 church members gathered in Salt Lake City for the two-day general conference, and the millions more watching via satellite, radio or Internet broadcast.

A feminist group launched a campaign earlier this year asking church leaders to let women lead the opening and closing prayer — a first for the conference — as a symbol of gender equality.

In addition to holding other church roles, Stevens is member of a three-person board that advises and assists parents on teaching their children about the faith.

Women hold leadership positions in the church but aren't allowed to be bishops or presidents of Mormon stakes, which are geographic areas similar to Catholic dioceses.

In January, the "Let Women Pray" campaign was launched from the same group that drew national attention in December by urging women to wear pants rather than skirts or dresses to church to raise awareness about what they perceive as gender inequality within Mormon culture.

Women regularly give speeches during the general conference and can pray in the audience. But until Saturday, they had never led the opening or closing prayers.

Earlier in the morning, Thomas S. Monson, the faith's president, announced the church is planning to build two new temples in Rio de Janeiro and Cedar City, Utah.

Temples are considered sacred to Latter-day Saints and are used for religious rituals including proxy baptisms, marriage ceremonies and other rites designed to strengthen church teachings.

Worldwide, there are 141 temples in operation and 29 under construction.

It is required and verified that you pay 10% of your income to the religion to be able to receive the ID to be a "Temple Mormon", and the ID must be renewed each year, and payments verified, I think every two years.

Within 15 years the LDS church will allow open gay marriage and behavior, and women in the priesthood.

The old guys in the dark suits have already decided that this is where they are going. They’re bringing it in slowly.

It will split the church and cause many to leave, but many will also follow along because the Prophet said so.

... Of course, women still will not be resurrected unless their husband calls their name - and he may not. If he does, her role will be to breed throughout eternity as a polygamous harem goddess to populate the Mormon god husbands new world.

man and woman for eternity is the basic theology. much as life at conception is basic theology the Catholics. Mormons won’t budge on it.

though if gay marriage is legalized in the country, polygamy won’t be far behind, IMO, since all the same “arguments” apply. (already happened in the Netherlands) I don’t know if the church will allow it again. Right now a polygamous person can’t join the church in foreign countries though their children can.

Half the world practices polygamy (which is one reason why there are 1 billion Muslims). Liberals will rejoice at legal gay marriage... until the Mormons outbreed them all.

So women of LDS won’t have to wear Kulats anymore?

The skirtlike women’s pant garments are “culottes”.

The peasants exterminated by Stalin for their success were “Kulaks”.

Anyway, women in Mormonism will always be second class. After all, only a woman’s husband can call her forth in resurrection on the Last Day. Look it up.

interesting

So just how do women breed faster depending on whether or not she is married to a husband of her own

or shares one with other females...

Note: Your theory didnt work for the Mormons...

the women had LESS children thay they might have if they had been allowed to have their own ...

some of Joey Smith’s 40+ “wives” and Briggy Young’s 80 “wives” had no children by them at all...

so how do the Moslem women manage to change natural biology ???

1 Cor 14: 34 Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

Just to stir it up a little ...

Youre right N00b

Dead dunking is not Biblical...

Like Paul said...its a waste of time ...

Thats not the way to get saved...

Theres only one way and its not through being “proxy baptisied”

Its through Him, the LORD Jesus Christ who is God...

I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No man or woman comes to the Father, except by Me. (The LORD Jesus Christ, John 14:6)

Temples are considered sacred to Latter-day Saints ...

They ARE?

WHY?

They are found in the Book of MORMON and ANY other scripture that MORMON claim as holy and valid certainly contains NONE of the SECRET rituals that are performed in a 'temple'.

So; just WHO was the fella that thought all that stuff up?

Is THIS why only about 15% or so of ALL Mormons are 'temple worthy'?

It must be rough to be an 85% MORMON and KNOW that you'll NEVER dwell where the LORD is in the three tiered place that Headquarters has deemed as "Heaven".

It will split the church and cause many to leave, but many will also follow along because the Prophet said so.

It WOULD?

After Joseph Smith had done SO much to hold it together???

With the Mormons (to be precise, the members of The Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - based in Salt Lake City) intent on being called “Christians” after so many years of eschewing that word, and despite the fact that there are so many fundamental theological differences between Christianity and Mormonism, I often wonder:

How do members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints feel about calling the members of its various spin-off sects Latter-Day Saints, Christians, or Mormons? Or about those sects calling themselves Mormons or Latter-Day Saints? (There was an earlier campaign by LDS to have journalism style books use the word “Mormon” to refer only to LDS, and not RLDS, FLDS, or other LDS sects).

For a man who bragged about holding things together, Joseph Smith, Jr. doesn’t appear go have done a good job of it during his lifetime. Wycam Clark’s “Pure Church of Christ” spun off in 1831. This trend continued. There were six LDS sects spawned in the 1830s, eight in the 1840s, two in the 1850s, and seven in the 1860s.

Do those responsible for the “Mormons are Christians” campaign consider these denominations to be Mormons or Latter-Day Saints? Surely many of these denominations are much closer to mainstream LDS than LDS is to Christianity. Many stick to Smith’s teachings and old temple endowment ceremonies.

Are members of those LDS groups “Mormons”? “Latter Day Saints?” “Christians?”

Do the folks in Salt Lake City have a problem with any of those groups, who believe in the restoration of the original church by Joseph Smith, calling themselves Mormons or Saints?

Most of these divisions in the Latter-Day Saint movement occurred over the issue of polygamy or succession of the Prophet. Sects broke off when Joseph Smith was still alive, and when Brigham Young was named prophet, because they didn’t believe in the practice of plural marriage – either publicly, or in some cases when it was practiced in private and denied in public.

Of course, there was the great split between Rocky Mountain Saints and Prairie Saints, when LDS members couldn’t agree on a successor prophet to Smith, Jr., and the church went to Utah, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania under Brigham Young, Sidney Rigdon (senior member of the First Presidency), James Strang, Lyman Wight, Alpheus Cutler, William Smith, David Whitmer (a BOM witness), or Joseph Smith III (son of Joseph Smith, Jr.). Almost all of these individuals still has multiple sects in existence that date to an 1844 decision about who should be the next President/Prophet of the church.

The Prairie Saints split into sects over the issue of whether Smith practiced polygamy. Rocky Mountain Saints had many, many spinoff sects after the 1890 Manifesto – groups that still practice plural marriage.
