How Margaret Thatcher Helped Invent Soft-Serve Ice Cream
Grub Street New York ^ | April 8, 2013

Posted on 04/08/2013 11:28:51 AM PDT by Loyalist

This morning, Margaret Thatcher died at age 87 owing to complications from a stroke. One of the lesser-known accomplishments of Britain's first female prime minister is her role in the creation of soft-serve.

Thatcher, an Oxford chemistry grad, supported herself financially in the fifties by working at food manufacturer J. Lyons and Co. There, she became part of a team of chemists that developed key emulsifiers for ice cream.

By increasing the amount of air and making it possible to churn soft-serve out of a machine, Thatcher paved the way for Britain's Mr. Whippy trucks. Her work also had financial benefits: Soft-serve allowed manufacturers to cut costs by using a smaller amount of ingredients.

Though Thatcher later faced scrutiny for eliminating free school milk, earning the nickname "Milk Snatcher," she did an invaluable service to dairy. Eat a smooth, creamy (yet still airy-light!) soft-serve cone today in remembrance of the Iron Lady.

Who knew? She had a REAL job before becoming a politician.

Obama literally never had a productive job his entire life.

She was just an MP when she was given the moniker “Thatcher the Snatcher” over the school milk program. At that time those who derided her scoffed at the idea that she would ever be Prime Minister.

At the time I always heard it as “Thatcher the Snatcher” and never as “Milk Snatcher” as all the obits are quoting.

Are you being funny?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_cream

One important development in the 20th century was the introduction of soft ice cream. A chemical research team in Britain (of which a young Margaret Thatcher was a member)[21][22] discovered a method of doubling the amount of air in ice cream, which allowed manufacturers to use less ingredients, thereby reducing costs. It made possible the soft ice cream machine in which a cone is filled beneath a spigot on order. In the United States, Dairy Queen, Carvel, and Tastee-Freez pioneered in establishing chains of soft-serve ice cream outlets.

The PBS series on the economy, Commanding Heights, episode1 has a lot of history about how Margret Thatcher turned around the British economy in the 1980s especially how she divested government held industries like coal mining. I have all my macroeconomics students watch this episode. Watch the video here.

Thanx for sharing this...I had no idea!

I swear I learn something new at FR everyday....and I adore soft serve so thank you Baroness-(the real Dairy “Queen”) for all you did for the world and as someone else said, I get sick thinking about the worthless money-suckers we have been saddled with in DC, most who have never done an honest days work in their life.

Please Dear Lord-send us more people like Margaret-we desperately need them!

I never knew this. Thanks for posting. This was woman who had a real job and was independent back in the fifties. Feminists are clueless.

Though Thatcher later faced scrutiny for eliminating free school milk...

Because parents can never take care of their own kids, right, Leftists? This is why I hat the Left: they really treat people as stupid cattle.

Hell even the Queen of England had a job before she was Queen (Worked in the Motor pool in the armed forces.) Obama has never worked ever in his life.

So you’re saying I have the Baroness to thank for my old high school job at the local Tastee-Freez back in the early 70s? Another trivia tidbit to take up brain cells...
