I doubt that's what happened. More likely somebody was reading the obituaries (some do - my mom for instance) and spotted a familiar surname.

It may be that the obit substantiated what was observed at calling hours or the funeral. Isn't it reasonable to think that a few students, parents, or other teachers showed up to offer condolences?
