WHO says new bird strain is "one of most lethal" flu viruses

A new bird flu strain that has killed 22 people in China is "one of the most lethal" of its kind and transmits more easily to humans than another strain that has killed hundreds since 2003, a World Health Organization (WHO) expert said on Wednesday.

The H7N9 flu has infected 108 people in China since it was first detected in March, according to the Geneva-based WHO.

Although it is not clear exactly how people are being infected, experts say they see no evidence so far of the most worrisome scenario - sustained transmission between people.

An international team of scientists led by the WHO and the Chinese government conducted a five-day investigation in China, but said they were no closer to determining whether the virus might become transmissible between people.

"The situation remains complex and difficult and evolving," said Keiji Fukuda, the WHO's assistant director-general for health security.

"When we look at influenza viruses, this is an unusually dangerous virus for humans," he said at a briefing.

Another bird flu strain - H5N1 - has killed 30 of the 45 people it infected in China between 2003 and 2013, and although the H7N9 strain in the current outbreak has a lower fatality rate to date, Fukuda said: "This is definitely one of the most lethal influenza viruses that we've seen so far."

Scientists who have analyzed genetic sequence data from samples from three H7N9 victims say the strain is a so-called "triple reassortant" virus with a mixture of genes from three other flu strains found in birds in Asia. Recent pandemic viruses, including the H1N1 "swine flu" of 2009/2010, have been mixtures of mammal and bird flu - hybrids that are more likely to be milder because mammalian flu tends to make people less severely ill than bird flu...

By the time it reaches us, it will have muated into a lesser strain...

ALso this always seesm to happen with the bird flus and whatnot, a lot start out in little crap dunk villages in china where they have no idea how to treat the regular flu. So there is less regular sanitation and less “checken soup” and warm bedrest etc....

So it kills at the same rate as the flu USED to kill people inthe USA in the 1800’s and early 1900’s.

So they panic and scream about how this is the most lethal strain yet.....

And then when it gets here it is just anoterh bout of the flu and mayeb a few people who get it and already have health issues kick the bucket...

Seen it before, been there... done that.

Unless of course it mutates to one with easy human to human transmission.....

Exactly!

And flights from Asia to our West Coast take less than 24 hours.

“Taiwan confirmed an H7N9 bird flu infection in a traveler returning to the island from China... The patient, who is in critical condition in an isolation room, didn’t come into contact with birds and poultry, Chiu said. “

Here’s a remedy to fend off some nasty respiratory problems:

1 gallon water

Add 20 drops Oil of Oregano

Shake well each time before drinking.

Make up a new batch as needed for at least 6 days.

If this flu is so bad, now is the time to put controls in place. It seems to me the best method would be to stop all transpacific air travel and perhaps Pacific rim air travel. If the infected have to travel by ship or land then the odds are that the disease will manifest itself before the travelers arrive and can be quarantined to protect the uninfected.

Unfortunately, while we’ve got to takes such warnings seriously, we’ve also got to be on our guard for such alarms possibly being government-manufactured crises; federal spending will “solve” the problem.

In fact, I saw a similar thread concerning WHO and “new bird flu” in China in FR a week or two ago with nothing being mentioned so far from any other source.

Kind of like every hurricane season is the worst. Probably will do like the Weather Channel and start naming flu seasons.

I don’t know about 20 drops per gallon, but I use 10 to fifteen drops of Oregano Oil in a teacup of cold water and it does a hell of a job on colds, the flu, or what-have-you. It does really work, and quickly too, if you can stand the taste.

Last summer I passed through the Denver airport for connecting flights. Both times as I got off the plane I remarked that I felt like I was in a third world country.

Wow, that’s good to hear. Maybe 20 drops is too little. I just heard of this last night and didn’t give it any thought. Thanks, PUGACHEV.

I need to investigate.
