The concern is not whether the Syrians are gassing other Syrians but as the Assad regime crumbles significant amounts of dangerous agents such as sarin and other nerve agents are grabbed by various bad actors, such as Hezbollah. Iran will not be pleased to see its only ally in the region disappear and its proxies may deliver the US a sarin surprise one fine day. The US is trying to help pro-Saudi Sunni islamacists come to power in the Arab Moslem countries. Both because of Saudi deep reach into our government and because of a mistaken belief that such regimes will lead to a calming effect among the turban turners. It is even expected with Sunni Islamiacists in power the Saudis will be willing to squeeze the paliwogs to get them to come to some sort of deal with Israel. While this strategy is dangerously delusional , the concern with Sarin like agents going loose is just common sense. Unfortunately, as with everything the US does in the foreign arena , it has to be wrapped in a smokescreen of boy Scout rhetoric about WMD’s and how bad all this is.
