Memo to the South: Go Ahead, Secede Already!
The Daily Beast ^ | April 30, 2013 | Lee Siegel

Posted on 04/30/2013 7:00:36 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Let’s face it—on nearly every important issue, from gun control to immigration to gay marriage, red states are holding America back. Lee Siegel on why the South should get the hell out of the union.

Let’s not be fooled by all the bipartisan rhetoric that has been streaming out of the GOP since Romney’s self-destruction. Hundreds of thousands of petitioners in a handful of red states still want to secede? Well, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

A solid block of Southern states continues to refuse to expand Medicaid, thus squashing one of the linchpins of the president’s health-care reform. The South will likely be the last and most stubborn battleground in the fight for gay marriage. Gun control? The more the two sides seem to get cozier with each other, the faster gun-control legislation gets watered down—and more and more red states are passing laws making it legal to carry a concealed weapon. As for immigration, the red states seem to be relaxing their anti-immigrant fervor, but nothing approaching new legislation is even on the horizon.

The sad truth is that “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” can only be achieved at this point if the nation is split in half. Far from being fanciful or fanatical, the proponents of secession have a stronger grasp of political reality than just about anyone else. In fact, there are serious reasons why the North itself should take the lead in a secessionist movement.

Just think what America would look like without its mostly Southern states. (We could retain “America”: they could call themselves “Smith & Wesson” or “Coca-Cola” or something like that.) Universal health care. No guns. Strong unions. A humane minimum wage....

The author doesn’t seem to realize that given the free choice, the productive people on which they rely for funding of their progressive utopia would move to the free states.

We all know what would happen, and why the leftists with power would never let secession happen without a fight.

The progressive states would quickly discover “border controls” to keep people from fleeing.

It’s amazing how many get sucked into this idiotic argument.

I think the blue states would certainly 'encourage' people to stay put, through onerous exit taxes, state confiscation of assets, etc. They'd skin conservatives alive on their way out.

I find it so amusing when people from blue states talk about seceding.

The parasite seceding from its host. Won't work for long.

Just like those escaping any communist country in the world throughout history - it was often worth it to leave everything behind.

My greatest barrier at the present time is taking care of my mother, who has multiple health issues, and three different medical specialists. She is receiving what appears to be very good care where we are, and I fear losing that in a move to a more sane state. Getting good medical care established, especially given the current state of things (Obozocare) is a dire concern.

As a former NY’er, I ask, why is everyone leaving the North in the first place? Why are they moving to red states? The South isn’t the land of whipping slaves picking cotton anymore, its where industry is moving. The North will tax itself out of existence, and have the southern revenue diverted to them so they can survive. Far fetched?? Maybe not.

I wish today, imagine having freedom from DC and the elitist north east and big northern cities and their parasites moving down here.

“Expulsion is the word you are looking for. New England, New York City, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco and LA should be expelled from the Union....”

Actually wouldn’t it be better to: “EXPEL ALL THE LIBERALS?”

Northern Florida (and the Panhandle, too) are still conservative country - unlike Dade, which is basically South New York, and I say that with all due affection. ;-)

I'm moving my family to central North Carolina. Small town, still an easy commute to my office, nicer weather, better values. Almost like America used to be when I was growing up.

wish you and your family all the best and good luck.

It might take time to adjust for the first two years but in the end I;m sure you would have made the right decision and got out of the north east

Not a bad idea. Wait for all the moving vans to stop dividing the sane from the statists, then immediately declare war on the north. Use neutron devices to depopulate the northern states, move back in, and then build the wall along the southern border.

Problem solved, gains consolidated, 17th Amendment stricken, 14th Amendment’s ‘penumbras and emanations’ illuminated, 9th and 10th Amendments reaffirmed.

Move the Capitol the the deepest, darkest red state you can find and then let the world know that a real superpower is back on the scene. Hit us with a plane this time, and you’ll pull back an irradiated stump. Our advice would be to find and destroy the AQ cells in your country within the next 6 months or expect a nuclear candigram from us.

Oh, and extend the ballistic nuclear defense shield system to Poland, the UK, Germany, Israel, Japan, Taiwan, the Philipines, Singapore, and our other actual allies.

Appreciate that. I’ve spent a lot of time in the region on business and I really like the people there. Unlike most of the Northeast, NH isn’t completely gone yet, but I fear it’s only a matter of time. The last straw for me was observing my daughter’s high school curriculum - all “Common Core” and socialist/redistributionist bullcrap.
