Endangered beetle poses pipeline obstacle

WASHINGTON — Building the $5.3 billion Keystone XL oil pipeline across the middle of the United States will require thousands of workers and millions of pounds of steel.

It will also require a lot of smelly dead rats.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service this month said that Keystone's proposed route across Nebraska put the endangered American burying beetle at risk. The agency said the black and orange-spotted insect could be spared, and the project move forward, if proper procedure is followed.

That means pipeline builder TransCanada Corp. will have to trap and relocate the one-inch beetles, using frozen rats that have thawed for at least three days for maximum pungency, according to detailed protocols U.S. authorities have drawn up to protect the burrowing bug.

"It's amazing that you have to go through all this time and effort to protect a beetle, but they do," said Michael Whatley, executive vice president of the Consumer Energy Alliance, an industry-backed group based in Washington that promotes low energy costs and supports Keystone. "The take away is that no matter what t's have to be crossed or i's dotted, they are doing it."

I’m just betting that the beetle would move on its own if left alone.

You have got to be kidding me.

I have an idea, TransCanada should give up on the US market. The country is not being run by serious people. Just build the pipeline to Kitimat and collect from the Chinese tankers that will line up for the oil.

I would like to know why the US is pushing Canada to feed the enemy with energy. Anyone?

Whenever some species is “endangered”, the questions need to be asked as to what niche this species serves and what WILL (not may) take its place if it didn’t exist.

Something will fill the niche. It always does. This is how you get rid of weeds in your lawn/garden - replace the weeds with something you want that fills the same role.

Assuming, of course, that you’re actually concerned about the environment and not looking for an excuse to hinder human energy use.

I'm betting we won't miss it if it doesn't.

So... how much will they spend (which means this gets added to the cost of ‘fuel’ that we pay for) to keep this one species alive ?

How long will this take?

We are ‘worried’ about this one species, and yet EVERY DAY 150-200 species go extinct.

Why is that NEVER mentioned ?

No one missed the 150+ species that went extinct YESTERDAY, or the day before that, or the day before that, or the day before that...

I have a solution. If the beetle is endangered why not call in the experts?

There is no “endangered beetle”!

It’s your standard enviro-whacko invention.

They have spent over 30 years sending biology students into the field, with challenge to find an example of “unique” flora or fauna, within a given area.

The prof then enters the data into a catalog for the express purpose of being able to object to any project proposed for ANY area in the nation.

No project developer is in a position to challenge the bogus claim of the uniqueness of a particular claimed species.

Never mind that the term “species” has been bastardized to the point where variables as subtle as color, are used to make the claim of uniqueness.

Exactly.

If it was endangered already, why should we try to reverse what is already happening.

Want to bet it would thrive after the pipeline is built? This is simply an excuse by the regime to stop the pipeline. The same radicals are in the environmental agency as are in the IRS.

Pray for America to Wake Up

Just kill the useless things and build the pipeline!

It’s a BEETLE! There are only something like 800,000 species of beetles.
