Ailing GOP Needs a Religious Reformer

Modernizing party can't forget its base: Michael Gerson

(Newser) – The Republican Party might win the odd national vote in the coming years, but it needs a long-term prescription: Eventually, "there won’t be enough white and gray voters to win national elections," writes Michael Gerson in the Washington Post. But as the party seeks to reform, it can't forget about the religious conservatives that form its biggest constituency. Just look at David Cameron: He's tried to expand the appeal of Britain's Tories and is losing his base in the process.

In short, the GOP "needs to become more socially inclusive without becoming socially liberal," Gerson notes. In addition to policy changes, the effort calls for a special candidate, one who can focus on reform while maintaining "the sympathy of religious conservatives." It's a challenge, but the key is for the candidate "to appeal to religious conviction as a motivation for reform." He or she might push prison reform or seek to lower the school dropout rate, Gerson suggests. We've seen hints of the religious strategy from Paul Ryan and Marco Rubio, but such instances "remain rare." Click for Gerson's full column.

Or to put it another way.... In short, the GOP "needs to become more socially liberal without becoming socially inclusive," Gerson notes.

~snort~ Let me know how this works out.

Well, I agree that there needs to be a real religious revival in America. The last meaningful one was more than 100 yrs. ago. But we can’t limit it to the GOP. God needs to get a hold of everyone’s heart. And I too don’t want “this” formula. Worthless.

More liberal BS. The latest data shows that the numbers of births for both illegal and legal immigrants has fallen at a rate four times greater than the white population. The number of blacks percentage-wise hasn’t changed in 50 years.

The liberal base is disappearing faster than the conservative base. This is why the fascists are desperate for illegal criminals.

Demographics look bad for the GOP short term, but long term, the rats are in real trouble. Their birth rates are in the toilet, and with home schooling on rise, their opportunities to steal conservative kids via academia are decreasing. I highly recommend one liberal book. Shall the religious inherit the earth by Eric Kaufman. Its full of leftist bell ringing from an experienced de.mographer who sees us trending the way of Israel withing 20 years. The Amish population alone doubles every two decades. This is indeed why they need to bring in as many Mexicans into the country as possible.

No, what the GOP needs is to get rid of assholes like Gerson that insist on turning the party into Dem-Lite.

Gersen has no clue on how this all works. With 66 million Democrats, 61 million Republicans and 90 million people who don’t vote at all, it’s likely that Republicans are somewhat marginally tolerable ~ maybe even popular!

It will need to remain true to the stable, pro-life convictions of its strongest supporters, while recognizing broad shifts taking place on gay rights among younger Americans, even within the Republican base.

This is simply wrong about "gay rights". What a conservative caucus in the Republican Party needs to do is attack head on the premise on which "gay rights" has falsely been built....the gay gene.

There is only one way to build a gay and that is through coercion. It is a selfish, mean thing to seduce/abuse someone into a lifestyle that kills them earlier, is susceptible to a legion of diseases, mental breakdowns, gross promiscuity, bizarre behavior, unfullfillment, and early death.

It is a caring thing to tell people to reject such a lifestyle as destructive.

It’s amazing. The GOP can’t make a moral argument, but they can’t even argue from science! There is NO homosexual gene. Most voters think 25% of the country is homosexual! The fact that this falsehood hasn’t ever been challenged is lunacy.

God needs to get a hold of everyone’s heart.

Good luck!

HE can't even 'get hold' of Christian's hearts!!

2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, who are called by my name,
shall humble themselves,
and pray, and seek my face,
and turn from their wicked ways; ,

then will I hear from heaven,
and will forgive their sin,
and will heal their land.
