A video posted yesterday on YouTube shows the grisly shooting of a dog by a police officer in Hawthorne, California.

The 130-pound, 3-year-old Rottweiler named Max was shot to death after he escaped through a window in a parked car and ran over to his master, Leon Rosby, who was being arrested for filming the scene on his phone.

There is a video at the link, but it is quite disturbing. I don't recommend it for anyone who does not want their heart to break with sadness and then boil with anger.

These cops are nothing but thugs with badges. All citizens should be outraged by their actions.

Are you saying that the arrested man in this case is in the wrong?

Or are you saying that cops cannot be held responsible for perhaps unlawful behavior because they must deal with so much potential danger?

Shoot first - seems to be the go to tactic these days.

In a way this is WHY we need google glass, it will be less obvious to film cops and thusly more easy to catch police corruption and abuse of the citizens...

I'm more outraged at the number of cop-haters here on FR.

You are a dictator’s dream citizen, Dutchboy.

Compliant and unconcerned with abuse of power.

Recording anyone with a recording device within your own arms length should be as constitutional of a right as free speech.

It is like any form or regular memory and even more compelling in case of the courts. Think of it as an extension to eidedic memory than anyone can use.

As long as the person recording isn’t in the way or making noise or distracting the law enforcement officers I see NOTHING at all wrong with it.

Do you have the right to your own memories recorded in your brain or some device? The right to record should be just as sacred as the right to playback (speak)...

When it comes time to “just following orders” have fun with that....

And I’m concerned about the number of Freepers who apparently don’t know the police arresting you for filming them is a gross violation of Civil Rights (unless the person doing the filming is physically interfering with the police) or apparently just don’t care.

Looks like there’s more to it from reading the article. The additional info suggests that from the very beginning he was putting himself, his dog, and the police in danger by approaching an active crime scene and with his loud radio hampering their ability to hear.

“Sorry...no sympathy here. Go walk in the cops shoes for a few years then give us a call.”

If, and I stress IF, the story is as written and the cop was arresting someone from videoing then yes the cop is in the wrong.

As the media can no longer be trusted to be our watch dogs, private citizens recording the actions of LEOs and elected officials are the last hope to keep power hungry thugs in check.

We citizens give elected officials and LEOs some limited power over us but if they abuse it then all bets are off.

In fact the punishment for an elected official or cop who abuses their power should at minimum be double of what the average citizen would receive for the same crime.

Power, like fire, can be a useful tool or a deadly one and we are seeing way too many cases of abuse of power at ALL levels.

You are correct. After watching this video, I do hate these rogue thug “cops”. And I hate the others that abuse the power of their badge.

I dare you to watch the video and then defend the actions of the officers.

If you watch the Vid on the Tube you will notice Hawthorn is very much prevelent.
1. The guy should have left when he was goin to!
2. The guy should have made sure the dog could not get out of the car.
Yes I feel the cops were in the wrong but as Jim said you don’t tug on Supermans cape.

Absurd, arrogant behavior.

There are many good cops out there, but they are being overtaken by the wanna-be “operators” that drool over black tactical gear and have no conflict resolution skills.

Cops like that deserve getting chewed up by a rottie.

Note to freepers: while filming cops, be discrete...

I watched the unedited video. As a cop, I understand the actual shooting. HOWEVER, I have no idea why this guy was ever put into cuffs.

Evidently he's a known agitator to the cops and one of the cops recognized him. The way the man immediately put the dog in the car and placed his hands behind his back tells me that he knew that what he did was about to get him arrested. But why? What could he have said that was so illegal? I imagine he was just going to be given a ticket for some sort of violation and sent on his way.

But it really doesn't matter. I don't believe he should have been detained in the first place. People talk s--t to me all the time. Just smile and ignore them. It just isn't worth the lawsuits. Too bad about the dog, but if one attacks, the shooting is justified. What lead up to the shooting may not have been.

I thought the courts had determined that merely filming police activity was not “obstructing”. Do these laws vary from one locality to another, are cops not being properly trained, or do they just not give a $hit?
