Irish police charged eight men with Irish Republican Army membership Friday after police raided a suspected meeting of the outlaws Dublin leadership, inflicting what a senior policeman called a major blow to the New IRA splinter group.
All eight men were being arraigned Friday night at Irelands anti-terrorist Special Criminal Court, which handles IRA-related cases with three judges and no jury.
A senior police officer, speaking on condition he not be identified because he wasnt authorized to discuss the raid, told The Associated Press that officers from the Special Detective Unit have kept Dublin-based activists of the New IRA faction under surveillance for months in anticipation of catching them gathered together in a strategy meeting.

Looks like organized crime via terrorism is branching out in Dublin.
Anyone who has a few hours and a few dollars to spare should check out a film called "The Crying Game",made about 20 years ago. It's two stories in one...a foolish, disgusting story about sexual perversion and a fascinating story about the workings of the IRA.Ignore the first story mentioned and you have a great film.Forrest Whittaker and Miranda Richardson are both outstanding.
Ireland ping! P.J. O’Rourke says all the factions are usually thugs, whether it’s Ireland, Lebanon, Somalia, Iraq ...
Didn’t it come out that the IRA was largely run by the British?
Huh?
It is suspected by some that the UK government was able to turn one or two high-ranking IRA members into confidential informants.
It is suspected by others that this is only a deliberately planted rumor for UK psychological operations.
The new IRA is basically a criminal organization much like mafia.Using the guise of being patriotic and doing it for the uniting of Eire.
I recall something coming out a few years ago. Just did a search and found this about “stake knife”, which is what I was partly recalling.

There is no question that by the early 90s the British had severely penetrated the senior echelons of the Provisional IRA (given the fact that they had also turned the senior levels of the Loyalist groups one could almost say British Intelligence was running the Troubles by then).
How far that penetration went is a matter of debate. Some like the present day dissidents believe it went right to the very top and that Adams and McGuinness were British stooges. I cannot say nor can anyone else for certain.
By the late 80s the IRA was split, the hardliners in East Tyrone wanted to use the massive Libyan arms shipments for a last ditch “Tet Offensive”, these hardliners were opposed by the Adams faction.
Maybe it is just coincidence that the last major shipment from Libya was intercepted by the British in 1987 and in the following three years the entire leadership of East Tyrone IRA was wiped out in a series of well-planned British ambushes and Adams was then free to push forward his peace strategy.
Like I say, probably just a huge set of coincidences.
OK. I just had a vague recollection of some sort of UK involvement in IRA.
