I’ve always been puzzled by the theory as well. A US ambassador is kidnapped. Then to get him back, we swap him for the blind sheik. And that would be perceived as a foreign policy success?
A kidnapped ambassador, dealing with terrorists and submitting to their blackmail. Hardly stuff you want to add to your resume just a few weeks shy of an election.

YES! This! I want to believe this theory, but certainly getting a US Ambassador kidnapped and releasing a terrorist doesn’t make Obama look good. Yes, someone explain this.
It would be "proof" that Obama is not weak and impotent among foreign nations/relations, giving him and his people [not blacks, his supporters and allies: statists & socialists] something concrete to point to. It could even be mitigated/spun as regrettable, but necessary [to save the Ambassador's life]

Whether or not such a spin would be successful is a good question, but thankfully irrelevant.
What you are thinking is from days gone by. Trading the ambassador for the blind sheik would have been spun to make Obama look like he is a caring man who wanted to save our gay ambassador. Giving up a blind old guy who has been imprisoned for years would be spun as “no big deal”.

It would be presented to the American people that Obama successfully negotiated the release of our kidnapped Ambassador. Nothing would be said about any trade.
