The significance of the hoodie, sweat pants, sneakers, etc., is this. In the prison system, inmates are allowed to have a set of “sweats” in specified colors and certain kinds of gym shoes, usually gray or white. For many parolees, the only clothes they own are the sweats, so they are released from prison in this clothing. In a sense, the sweat pants and hoodie are the official uniform of the parolee, so these young delinquents are dressing up like their heroes; the guys who have been to prison.
