Fort Hood trial turns bizarre as shooter grills witnesses
fox ^ | 8/6/13

The trial of the Fort Hood gunman, who is acting as his own attorney, took a surreal turn as the former Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 in the November 2009 attack grilled witnesses -- including his former boss in the military and a fellow Muslim who spoke to him the day of the shooting..

After a short opening statement in which ex-Army Maj. Nidal Hasan called himself a "mujahedeen," admitted to the rampage and said "the dead bodies will show that war is an ugly thing," Hassan cross-examined prosecution witnesses, including retired Lt. Col Ben Kirk Phillips, his former boss. When pressed by the defendant, Phillips acknowledged that his officer evaluation report had graded Hasan as "outstanding."

Hasan also cross-examined Pat Sonti, who met Hasan at the Killeen Islamic Center in Fort Hood the morning of the shooting. Sonti said Hasan took the microphone at the mosque and called for prayer.

Has Obama declared Hasan could have been his son yet?

...Phillips acknowledged that his officer evaluation report had graded Hasan as "outstanding."

And I'll bet his 201 file shows a rating of "expert" with both the M-16 and his standard issue sidearm.

The prosecution should just rest it there. LOL

The judge, Col. Tara Osborn, told jurors to prepare for a trial that could last several months.

I find that curious, since this animal admits what he did.

He has admitted to premeditated mass murder committed some two years ago. Why is this scum still breathing our oxygen? He should have been terminated with extreme prejudice and his body fed to hogs. NOW if not sooner!

Regards,
GtG

PS Maybe skip the terminate stuff and go directly to the hogs...

None of this computes. Why doesn’t the prosecution ask for a motion to wrap things up since the defendant has admitted his crimes, and the court is there not to ascertain why he did what he did, and his “reasons” are irrelevant. Sentencing should be tomorrow. Something just ain’t right.

why does this circus have to go on for months

line up the witnesses, ask them “who shot you?” when they point to him, announce a verdict and shoot him

The articles says the prosecution is being very careful to dot every i and cross every t, because they want to reduce the chance that a death sentence will get overturned later. Even though it’s an open and shut case, if they rush it, they may make a mistake, and then people will be more unhappy with that than if they took a few extra months to prosecute.

It was not clear how the 42-year-old Hasan plans to fashion his stance into a defense.

It should be - there will be no defense. Hassan intends to use his trial to proselytize about Islam.

The judge has a lot of perfectly legal tricks and leeway up her sleeve to hasten the trial along...but she may want the publicity in this, her very own 15 minutes (or 15 months) of fame.

Maybe she'll be charmed by the good-lookin' Hasan. By his history, he entranced and shilled his way up the military ladder by charming and hoodwinking many, many educated people.

Perhaps she's just a plain dipstick like George Zimmerman's Judge Debra Nelson....then the trial may last forever and Major Hasan will get to spout all the Muzzie propaganda he wants to into the ears of an all-too-attentive media covering the trial.

Well, even if the prosecution rested tomorrow, they can’t just sentence him, because he has to have the opportunity to make his defense.

I don’t think it matters much, in terms of process, that he admitted to the shooting, since he has pled not guilty and can still mount a defense against murder even if he admits to the shooting. The Zimmerman trial is a perfect example of that. It’s hard to imagine any defense this guy could come up with would be convincing, but the prosecutors have to make a solid case anyway. They’ve got to assume he will try to dispute the charges somehow when he gets his turn.
