I don’t have a strong opinion either way regarding him as a newsreader, but watching him, Dickerson, McIlhenny, and SMU run roughshod over the SWC in the early 80s was quite a treat.

Dickerson got the most attention, but James put up plenty of yards himself, and was a pretty good punter as well.

At one time in this country, you were free to express your opinion, no matter what it was. Not so much these days.

When one’s employment is predicated on agreeing with the collective, there will be no dissension. What a brave new utopia that will be.

His stance on gays had nothing to do with this. He was a pompous, arrogant ass which is why ESPN did not renew his contract. His complete lack of professionalism during the Mike Leach/TT thing opened up he and his employer to massive potential liability. He’s a hypocrite of the highest magnitude. I, for one, am glad he will not be on the air and will never watch anything that he’s on.

I always enjoyed watching James. He had excellent balance. But, the defense was keying on Dickerson.

The worst part of all that was that GOP Guv Bill Clements, who was a SMU alum, was caught putting money into the play for pay scheme, and that ended his political career.
