They still need to be actually mugged by reality. Not bullied, not jostled, but violently mugged.

When they head out on their own, once out of parents home, college, and set up their own households, then REALITY begins to hit.

Not Conservative in the terms of the religious right. Rather Libertarian Conservative. Conservative in terms of smaller govt, Libertatian in terms of social values.

Good analysis.

Why millennials won't turn "conservative"

We are in an economic Depression.

The government can hide and lie about the true statistics all day long, but people in the real world know their situation.

Some people will continue to vote for Obama for Entitlements (both earned and unearned), and many young people have liberal social morals (read: un-Biblical). They also hope for student loan "forgiveness."

The fault lies with their cowardly parents who subsidize their Lazy Left life-style because they are afraid of these amoral off-spring.

Why millennials won't turn "conservative"

Simple. Because all the time they've spent in government indoctrination centers [schools] has filled their heads full of mush.

Millennials are far too decadent to ever be conservative. They have embraced the epicurean life style. Licentious sexual behavior including a tolerance for almost all perversions, widespread use of drugs, very limited child bearing, endless expectation of entitlements, neo pagan earth worship rather than traditional religion does not lead to a conservative political viewpoint or a prosperous future. There is a reason Obama was elected twice.

I can see them trending more toward libertarianism, but in order to be conservative, you have to have something to conserve. The Left has done a good job at erasing the values that are worth conserving, so the millennial generation is adrift. All that is necessary now is for their heads to be filled with a potpourri of liberal hogwash and you'll have the first generation of socialist rulers (if we don't already).

The only thing that will restore the Republic at that point is revolution. And there's no guarantee we'll win.

They can’t turn conservative because most have rejected Christian values and are still looking for the old “something for nothing”.

Every so often the wonks of wishful thinking give us an article about how blacks are becoming Republicans, how Hispanics are supposedly a natural GOP constituency"

Never understood how anyone could consider Hispanics, who overwhelmingly favor big-government treatment to every ill, as a "natural GOP constituency." And the bit about blacks turning to the GOP... that's about as laughable as it gets. Blacks and Hispanics act and vote as a bloc, and are keyed in to what their leaders tell them. They think in the collective, not the individual sense.

40 years ago my generation was very liberal. Very articulate and very committed. We had even fewer outlets reporting republican side then now. Now look at us.

Why does this guy publish his commentary in "RenewAmerica" when he has concluded it is all so hopeless?

I don't happen to think it's so hopeless, and we speak of what happens someday when "Millennials" get mugged by reality. True, it won't be pretty, and the shoe still has to drop on the Gen-Xers and Gen-Yers: Why Generation Y Yuppies Are Unhappy

The writer here certainly writes like he himself has been "mugged," and his prognostications are his "reality." But the flip in public opinion and outlook that could occur on a macro scale of sea change akin to the Reagan Revolution would be for 3 basic things to happen:

1. Unleash US energy production

2. Reduce gov't spending by 1%/year across the board, and achieve balance in 7 years.

3. Lower the top corporate tax rate to 25% (or even 20%)

Outcome:

1. Restoration of US as a net energy exporter

2. Balanced budget

3. Repatriation of foreign investment and off-shore cash.

The writer's depressed outlook too soon forgets the Carter malaise and damns us all to hopelessly more of the same.

Had the 2012 election gone differently I suspect the national outlook would also be substantially brighter about what Millennials will do or say, because they would have become parties to the ensuing prosperity.

We will crawl back control of both houses of Congress in 2014 if we don't grovel in all the defeatism this author does, and then the "Reformation" can begin led by the ascendancy of Tea Party types (doesn't have to be all Libertarians either, BTW).

A lot can happen between now and 2016. Surrendering the fight at the start is no way to win.

FReegards!

There is probably a lot more than one would think who are some combination of conservative and small l libertarian. It is up to the Tea Party conservatives to determine if that makes them valuable allies to fight for American liberties and freedoms with.

Young, hip people would never catch themselves dead advocating for a stiff like Romney or Dole. they just aren’t “cool”.

Somebody like Ted Cruz or Rand Paul would be acceptable because they are “rebels”.

That is depth of the calculation made.

One remedy is to tell them that they will NOT inherit your money if they don't get with the program. How many parents I know double-couponed it through life so their ingrate, liberal computer geeks could have it easier and leave college with no debt. In return, they trash their parents values and are still around for the hand-outs into their thirties.

Set up a trust to skip a generation. Ergo, you don't get squat...you already got yours. If you want to see it again, have a kid who will inherit it. Maybe a child treating them as they treated their parents will be a wake-up call. In the meantime, cutting off the gravy will be noticed.
