First Case Scenario (the story of Mark O'Mara's assistant, Lorna Truett - good read)
Orlando Life ^ | 8/28/2013 | Randy Noles

The State of Florida vs. George Zimmerman was no different. But there was one key player who was both highly visible and oddly inscrutable. Wearing an inevitable muted pantsuit, she sat at the defense table scribbling notes and occasionally whispering to the stoic Zimmerman and lead defense attorney Mark O’Mara.

Newspaper cutlines identified the woman with shoulder-length blonde hair as Lorna Truett, co-counsel. Although she never questioned a witness, spoke to a reporter or addressed the jury, she played an integral, behind-the-scenes role in this high-profile, once-in-a-career case.

Truett, whose name hangs on the shingle outside the tiny converted house from which O’Mara practices family and criminal law, had been out of law school less than two years and had been an attorney for about 10 months when Zimmerman came calling.

“I had kind of a premonition that we would get the case,” says Truett, who’s 39 but looks a decade younger. “I’d heard about it on the news, of course, and I asked a paralegal in the office if this was the sort of case Mark would take if asked. She said it was.”

Good story and a nice look behind the scenes of an historic trial.

I agree, good story, too bad it won’t get no play elsewhere

Well this case certainly put her on the map along with several others. It would be nice if at some point they could get paid for the job they did.

What happened to that legal defense fund? Wasn’t it over 100k?

I don’t know — a lot of it went to expert testimony.

It's up to her to turn her experience into something great.

Having a reference from MOM and Don West is a golden as gold gets.

I think you jest.

But that said, isn't your and my life our responsibility?

I do not expect someone else or fate to make me wealthy or famous.

This young woman has been given a great gift...it is up to her to make something of it.

No -- the recipient of the gift should make something out of it -- and George is the recipient of the gift.

George owes them a debt of gratitude and should do his best to see that they get paid and should be sitting down with O'Mara et al and asking what he needs to do to help them get paid and not engage in any activity that will hurt that effort.

Interesting tidbit right at the end of the article. Most of zimmerman’s family were submitted as prosecution witnesses which meant they couldn’t attend the trial. They were never called. Seems the prosecution just wanted to keep his side of the aisle devoid of any family to make him look disowned.

George is not the subject of this article.

This article is about Lorna Truett and her gift. She was in the right place at the right time...and I am confident she will make the best of it.

George is not the subject of this article.

George is inextricably intertwined in the subject matter of this article. The part that Lorna played in George's acquittal is the subject of the article.

This article is about Lorna Truett and her gift.

Just what is the "her gift" part and where is that in the article???

Gift in this case is not some skill she has but an opportunity that life has given her.

This whole article is about it...a gift that life has given to HER. An opportunity as a new lawyer to sit in court at the desk with two excellent lawyers in a very famous trial. An opportunity to learn from two masterful and victorious defenders.

An opportunity to provide valuable support in such a trial and to continue to work with O'Mara as an associate as his career takes off...and to share in O'Mara's cases as they become more high profile and potentially more complex and certainly more important.

So then working without being paid is O’Mara’s gift to her???

How does she pay her bills??? or are those gifts as well???

She was hired as MOM’s associate before the Zimmerman trial (the only other lawyer in his practice). I am sure she collects her salary...why wouldn’t she?
