It makes me wonder whether the delay in sending in the special forces was intentional so as to give the terrorists enough time to do their dismembering and torturing.

There has been no report as to how many hostages were freed — if any.

Is it possible that they only gave up after they had tortured and dismembered all their hostages and had nothing left to do???

These were most decidedly NOT hostages. They were not held for purposes of obtaining some sort of terms or protection from the authorities. They were held for sport.
