‘Not how we do it in New York’: Ex-NYPD cop questions sister's killing by Capitol police Published time: October 05, 2013 10:44

Police in Washington DC did not have to resort to shooting dead an unarmed woman, who lead officers on a short-lived car chase through the Capitol on Thursday, said the driver's sister, former New York police sergeant Valarie Carey.

"My sister could have been any person traveling in our capital," Valarie Carey told reporters outside her Brooklyn home on Saturday. "Deadly physical force was not the ultimate recourse and it didn't have to be."

Right, based on the recent motorcycle chase of the SUV in which the cops were part of the mob, they aid in the commission of crimes.

There was no need to kill her.Period.

Sad story, this poor woman should not have been shot to death.

Not armed with a handgun but armed with a vehicle capable of inflicting deadly force.

“Sad story, this poor woman should not have been shot to death.”

She sealed her fate by moving the car when it was surrounded by cops on foot; she could have killed them, and they take that into account. It is a sad story, because apparently she was crazy; thank God the daughter wasn’t hurt/killed.

How convenient that you spotted the fact that he had "an extensive arrest record" but you left out the main fact that it was "mostly for traffic offenses, including speeding, running a red light and driving with a suspended license. He pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in March 2011 after getting into a fight."

Are you implying that you advocate that people should lose their 2nd amendment rights over traffic arrests?

It’s how Obama does it. Aren’t you glad that you voted for him?

There are certainly a lot of versions of why she did what she did. Wonder what her real reason was?

“Not how we do it in NY”

NY’s spray and pray gunslingers would have picked off a few innocent bystanders,as well.

My understanding was the car was blocked at that point. As an ex state trooper there are options that could have been used. Police today have the idea of shoot first and let the rest sort itself out. Not good policy or police work in my opinion.

I agree with all of your points. My earlier point was to simply state that to portray the lady as being “unarmed” is essentially if not factually incorrect.

Gee, the cop now gets to feel like the rest of the proles who get shot up by the po-po.

I’m waiting for a “wrong address” no knock raid with the obligatory dog killing and homeowne getting shot that happens to be a police officer or family. Then the big karmic wheel in the sky will have finally turned.

There was one shooter wearing a sport shirt and shorts, not in a uniform. She saw him and was afraid.

“There had to be something else they could have done,” chimed in Amy Carey, a registered nurse who lives in Bedford-Stuyvesant. “She didn’t have to die. To know a child was in the car, too, why did they shoot?”

True but in that case anyone in a car can be considered armed. BTW I can kill you with my thumb. But I see your point. I just think most LEO’s understand a car can be deadly but the point of unarmed was meant in the context of the car not presenting a hazard at that point. Another point I wonder about and maybe you have more info. than me.
Tazers? I am pretty sure they would be equipped with them. Since the officers were approaching the car they should have been pretty sure she was unarmed. You don't approach if you suspect a weapon in this situation. Why no tazers drawn? Just guns. Poor training and a Robocop mentality in my opinion. Of course I was on the force 30 years ago when we usually tried to use the most uncommon of the senses. Common sense.
